I say ca ru mel. The U is a little more soft than a hard u. And I love caramel!

ca-ra-mel, in which the "a" is pronounced as in "hat." though i live in the midwest now, and i will occasionally say "i like carmels" or something if that's the pronunciation that the others in the conversation are using.

I say it both ways but I think the pronounciation I originally learned was "Kar-ml." I grew up near Detroit.
