Kyle, Brian, I'm talkin' to you... mainly. But if you're reading this and you follow, can you let me know what's up?

Last night at about 2am, my 'net connection shit the bed. I figure it's no different from the 7 other times I've had this same issue since getting Charter in February, so I start the process.

You know - recycle the modem, and if that ( Read more... )

Charter sucks. If you want something reliable, see if you can get a (more expensive) line from Speakeasy.net ( ... )

Unfortunately, no SLA. And they say "we can have someone out there to fix a problem within 8 hours, and we know there's a problem often before you do" blah blah blah.

They don't offer an updtime guarantee on their bigger plan either. I'll look into speakeasy if I still have issues this month. Thanks!

if there's a digital tv box in the house unplug it next time you're having connection issues, then reboot the modem... if it works every time you do that you might have a POS box in the house.

I have had to move a cable modem off of a split line because of a crap box.

Nope, no digital tv box. No cable box at all, actually. We're just on basic, and I'm actually going to drop it soon.

Ok here's the easiest way I can try to explain it.

The receiver at your ISP's Headend wants to see the signal hit back at 0db. The higher the TX on your modem, the more crap that it is trying to talk over in order to hit back at 0. Basically in the return path back to the headend, whether it be within the home, or on the street, is getting a ton of interference and the modem is built to try to compensate for that.

It sounds as if you're constantly pushing the limits of the modem though and at some points dropping connection all together because it can't talk over the shit.

A knowledgeable service tech would be the only way to determine the actual location of the issue.

Good luck!

Yeah the next tech I talked to at the Business end of Charter told me it had to be an area issue.

I have a spiffy new modem now. It's basically 3x the size of the residential modem, but they have me locked out of the modem settings altogether. So, I hope they're doing as good a job as they say they do of monitoring my signal.

I'll probably call up in a couple days to see what the track record is.

Oh, by the way - the tech broke my chair. Can I get them to replace it?
