WHAT THEY LOST:

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Generally speaking, Tobias is a quiet kid. Bird. Whatever. Before he was changed into what he is now, he was a dreamer. So much so that he was constantly picked on by bullies and was always their target. He was just that kind of kid. Someone people saw weakness in. However, meeting Elfangor and discovering the red-tailed hawk gave him something to believe in and care for, a reason to be proud of himself and a reason to want to fight. In fact, there was a bond between him and Elfangor, without him even aware of it. However, his quiet personality pulled into one of reclusiveness thanks to his time as a bird. He doesn't say much, because where he lives, there is no one to talk to. Just other birds, and they're not much of a conversationalist. He's rather stony even, and if he doesn't know someone, won't say anything. He's almost cold even, and because of his influence of being a hawk, has a tendency to not respond at all, if given the chance. Especially if one's just a normal human and he has no idea if they're a Controller. It's better to be safe than sorry. He has a scathing tongue at times, and is usually very serious. That is, until you get to know him. Once you befriend him, he opens up, and becomes a lot easier to interact with him.

He is a very sarcastic fellow, who likes to make jokes, but is more cynical in a way with his. He is friendly though, and very protective of his friends. In fact, that is often one of his faults is how caring he is though this seems to have taken a rather protective and possessive turn instead due to his transformation. While in his human form, he was sympathetic and soft, in his hawk form, it has turned into something like guarding his territory simply because of the hard time it takes to reach his emotions. He can be very casual, and but is hard to open up with his feelings. He has a tendency to put up a cold front, even if one is close to him, and doesn't like to talk about himself. He's still very much anti-social and has much self-esteem problems that remain from his human days. In fact, this often forces him to question himself, especially with his confrontation towards his human and hawk sides, having to fight between both. He is constantly debating between whether to hunt for food or not, considering the contrast it has with his very caring nature. He also lives constantly with an internal conflict between his human and hawk sides, and has many problems regarding his human life. He often suffers emotionally because he is not often capable of doing things normal boys his age can. Despite that though, it becomes obvious that he prefers his hawk life than he does his human, especially since his human life was utterly terrible for a boy his age. Once in human form, he becomes very awkward, and his hawk traits are evident. He has a thing with staring and often does sharp, sudden movements. When he gets nervous or flustered, he will flail his arms in an attempt to fly away and often becomes embarrassed when he does these things.

He has a tendency to either distance himself, or become emotionally involved, especially with things that have to do with family. He's rare to go out to do his own thing unless it's incredibly important to him. If that's the case, he'll do anything to accomplish it, but for the most part, he's a follower who, because he admires Jake, will always follow his orders and agree with them usually. Unless they're something drastically wrong, like killing Rachel off for the sake of the team. He is incredibly sensitive towards the lives of others, but in battle, he also can become incredibly cold and serious, but not enough so that he will make sacrifices just to help his cause. He very much keeps a level-head though, and at times, is more bird than human. Problem is, that dreamer side of Tobias is almost completely gone. There's no more naivety and there's no more innocence, not because of the things he's seen in regards to the Yeerks and the Andalites (though that has changed him and all his friends) but because of the decisions he has to make in regards to his humanity. Tobias is both human and hawk and is still struggling to combine both sides.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: A jerk of the head and fierce eyes were staring down, past the trees and into the meadow where not a blade of grass rustled. Everything was still and silent. Piercing gaze, and the bird settled on his perch in the tree, listening and waiting. He was hungry and he wanted something to eat. It was still hard to adjust to hunting to his food, but he was becoming accustomed to it, and he didn't mind so much. Besides, the bird in him pined for something squirming between his claws and -- There!

A rustle of feathers and he was swooping down, letting out a shriek. The rabbit never stood a chance, claws digging into and past the fur, sinking in and blood was pouring as he flapped upwards, landing on the same branch as before and beginning to eat his dinner. They had a meeting in the barnyard later. Tobias would've sighed if he could. Another invasion to the Yeerk pool now that they found a new entrance. It was frustrating, but at least now he could be useful. Well, useful in the way that he could only fly around and warn them of things coming. In fact, half the time he would be forced to sit outside of whatever ridiculous cover the Yeerks could come up with on the roof and stay as a look-out, which was not his idea of fun. However, he had no other choice -- what with lacking of morphs to be of any use. However, he was still hesitant to change into his human form; he was so unaccustomed to it that it was awkward to even think about it. How strange that it was the same when he had first become a hawk. Ironic, even? Whatever. He wouldn't be running around as some scrawny teenage boy to help out in battle. He'd probably get eaten first before that would happen; whether it would be accidentally by Cassie in her wolf form, or some Taxxon that missed snacktime. What a way to go.

Once finishing with the rabbit, Tobias started to preen. It was all instinct. At least, now it was. He was surprised that he managed to keep himself busy all day, even, though he spent most of the time flying around, or waiting outside of the other Animorphs' school. He didn't need technology or books or television or bad television shows or any of that. He had learned to live without it, learned to adjust to his new life and it felt like he was devolving in the end. Losing touch with his human self, the way his eyes would flick across the field the minute he saw movement, the way his wings rose to adjust to the slightest change in wind, and the way the hawk in his mind had settled so comfortably with the human of him that it was almost bewildering. There was no resistance anymore and decisions and thoughts were almost the same between the two of them. Like they had become one. He trusted the hawk and the hawk trusted in him and it was so easy to slip out of consciousness and let the other being inside of him take over -- just for a little bit. Maybe he was losing a little more of his humanity? After all, times of being at school with Jake was but a distant memory, and surely, things were easier. No school, no homework, no drama, and yet.

He missed it, in an odd sort of way.

But now there was a chance again. He had gotten that chance again. Gotten a chance to change that: past the two hours and stay forever. Or just taste it for a little bit, just a small moment and see what he was missing.

But he was scared. And he would admit it. Because he didn't know what he was anymore and that scared him even more.

Tobias spread his wings when he was done, shifting ever so slightly before waiting for the wind pick up, flapping hard before lifting off into the air. He needed to think. Get some air.

Too bad the hawk in him wasn't scared. He wanted that mutual agreement.
