C H A R A C T E R
☓ Name: Kadaj
☓ Series: Final Fantasy VII Compilation
☓ Reference: Here.
☓ Canon point: At the end of Advent Children, when he hears Aerith's voice and enters the Lifestream.
☓ Age: In the literal sense, he's only two years old. But he has the appearance of someone in their late teens/early twenties, as well as the skills, intelligence, etc.

☓ Background:
Kadaj's life ironically began with a death. Two years after the great SOLDIER named Sephiroth was defeated in the Northern Cave. As soon as Kadaj and his two brothers, Loz and Yazoo, sprang into being, they immediately started searching for "Mother." Unfortunately for them, they weren't the only ones seeking Jenova. Their paths crossed with the Turks, two of whom they took prisoner. But Reno managed to escape with the remains they so desperately wanted.

Elena and Tseng were brutally tortured for information, rewarding them with a couple of leads, that the trio were quick to follow. They waited at Zack's makeshift grave, watching the desert for Cloud. They believed that their "big brother" was hiding Mother, or at least knew where she was. And there they realized what a prodigal son he was. Instead of helping, he fought back against Loz and Yazoo, and tried to escape them and the Shadow Creepers on his bike. Kadaj watched the struggle from a nearby cliff while following up on another lead over the phone. If Cloud didn't know where Mother was, then the President of Shinra must. The battle ended as suddenly as it began, with Kadaj calling off the Creepers and his two brothers.

Kadaj gave the other two remnants their own orders before paying a visit to Rufus Shinra himself. Reno and Rude tried to stand between him and their boss, but the two Turks were easily put on the floor. Kadaj was already angry when he arrived, and could barely restrain himself as he admonished Rufus for lying to him. The shrouded man continued to insist that they had carelessly lost what Kadaj was there to retrieve, the "guest of honor" for their Reunion. Invitations had already been sent out in the form of Geostigma, the mysterious illness that infected many, including Cloud and even Rufus himself.

Kadaj returned the bloody IDs of Elena and Tseng, telling Rufus that he could swear on them if he wanted to continue to insist that he wasn't hiding Mother away from him. It seemed to rattle the president enough to ask Kadaj more of his plans. Kadaj had already expressed anger and heartache during their brief meeting, but at that question he showed amusement.

"But Sir, surely you've noticed..."

When Kadaj knelt down in front of Rufus and looked up into his eyes, then he understood the true meaning of "Reunion", and why Jenova was needed to acquire it. The energy was all around him, and looking into Kadaj's mako colored eyes made it frighteningly clear. Kadaj, as well as his brothers, were "remnants" of Sephiroth. And they held the key to bringing him back.

Meanwhile Loz and Yazoo were carrying out the order of gathering up the children who were affected by Geostigma and taking them to their hideout at the Forgotten City. Loz brought an added gift, materia that he'd retrieved after his fight at the Church with Tifa. Kadaj absorbed it, tainting it in the process. He began preaching his message to the assembled, brainwashing the children into believing that the Planet itself was the cause of their sickness, and that he, through their Mother, had been given the power to heal. He stepped into the stream, which turned black around him, and instructed his "family" to drink from it as he did. Once the poisoned water flowed through their bodies, they became powerless to resist him. Cloud, who'd come to the Forgotten City to rescue the children, succeeded only in being branded as the black sheep of Jenova's flock. A second battle followed, and this time Kadaj involved himself as well, showing Cloud that he was capable of fighting as well as commanding. The remnant had two blades of his own in the form of his katana, Souba, which he yielded with his left hand the way Sephiroth had. Things might've ended badly for Cloud if not for Vincent Valentine, who saved Cloud from the brothers, and had also retrieved Tseng and Elena. The former Turk filled Cloud in on what he knew about the situation. Geostigma was the result of alien matter infesting the body, which in turn tries to overcompensate and eliminate the intruder. That intruder was the Sephiroth gene, the memetic legacy of Jenova. While he was telling Cloud this, Kadaj had led his flock from the Forgotten City to the city of Edge.

Loz and Yazoo, along with the children, took up position near the Meteor monument in the plaza. Shinra made the monument, so perhaps Mother was there. When the citizens tried to intervene, they summoned more Shadow Creepers. But that was only the beginning of the populace's monster problems. Kadaj had taken to the high ground with Rufus Shinra, who through his questions realized the difference between Sephiroth and Kadaj. Sephiroth was the chosen one, and even if Kadaj sought to realize his Mother's dream and bring him back, he was still jealous of the SOLDIER. It actually irritated him that Sephiroth was coming back. Did it mean that mother loved him more? The president couldn't resist the chance to exploit Kadaj's feelings of inferiority, mocking him and angering Kadaj in the process. The remnant summoned the huge Bahumet Sin.

Kadaj seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the chaos and battles below. His brothers battled Rude and Reno while Avalanche was reunited to fight the summon. His glee was short-lived however. Rufus chose that moment to stand from his wheelchair and cast aside his shroud, revealing a curious silver box in his hand. Kadaj realized instantly what must be hidden inside, what had been close to him all along.

"A good son would've known."

Shinra's words, along with his deception, were more than Kadaj could take. As Rufus throws the box from such a height, Kadaj blasts him with the materia, causing him to fall as well. Kadaj leaps after the box willingly while the fighting raged on below. He lands gracefully several stories below with the box that contained Jenova's head finally in his possession. However it had been damaged by shotgun blasts fired by Rufus during their fall.

Now that they finally had what they wanted, all three silver-haired men got on their bikes to retreat. But of course Cloud gave chase. Loz and Yazoo covered him while he sped ahead with Mother. It wasn't their first battle with him, nor with the two Turks, Reno and Rude, who finally stopped them with a bang.

Kadaj finally stopped when he reached the Church in Midgar. Anyone watching would've seen the childlike joy and wonder on Kadaj's face as he opened the box to lay eyes on Mother for the first time. But they also would've seen his expression turn to one of anguish when he discovered that the damage had reached past the box. For once, someone other than Loz was crying. Those tears dried up quickly with the arrival of Cloud. His grief intruded upon, Kadaj fired a blast at him. Now things were getting fun again! He fired a bolt at him and was on the verge of finishing him off on his own when the water as pure as the Lifestream rose up against him.

Kadaj once more made his escape, but his new big brother refused to give up. When he caught up with him again, Cloud realized just how clueless Kadaj was, waiting for Mother to tell him what was going to happen next. Cloud touched a sore spot by reminding him of what he was - a puppet. Kadaj turned on him and the two began a swordfight that no ordinary person could've hoped to keep up with. Cloud's friends arrived, but didn't interfere. This was a fight between the two. Their swords clashed over and over again, with neither seeming to have the advantage. Kadaj made one last desperate attack, but it was unsuccessful. His sword fell, but he still held the one thing he wanted and need the most. The time for his Reunion had arrived.

Kadaj absorbed Jenova into his body, and in the blink of an eye became Sephiroth. But Mother's favorite was no more successful the second time as he was the first. Kadaj's own consciousness returned as he laid dying in Cloud's arms. A voice called out to him from the Lifestream. Believing it to be his beloved Mother, Kadaj willingly followed it...

☓ Personality:
Kadaj is the ultimate momma's boy. He's consumed with thoughts of "Mother", the calamity known as Jenova. He is a remnant of Sephiroth and the embodiment of his insanity and sadism. But without Jenova he will always be fractured in both mind and body. But what fuels him also has the power to hurt him. His uppermost desire is to please his mother, and he readily admits that he'd do anything if he thought it might please her. And yet deep within him, Kadaj always fears that she prefers Sephiroth to him, causing him to resent the very man responsible for his existence. This thought brings with it an insecurity like nothing else, like a child shunned by the parent that he adores. He suffers from a major inferiority complex, wanting to be Mother's favorite but knowing that Sephiroth will probably always occupy that position.

As the youngest of the three remnants, Kadaj is much like a toddler with too much power for his (and everyone else's) own good. Rufus described him best when he called Kadaj "Nightmare Junior." He hates liars and doesn't attempt to shroud his own words. Kadaj will always speak the truth, however he sees it. But he isn't all talk and no action. Fighting, chaos, destruction, these are his favorite games -- as long as he's winning. But like a child, it's a different story when he loses. He can be tricked, provided that one knows of his weak spot. At times, playing on his emotions and insecurities can be as easy as taking candy from a baby. Other times, Kadaj just can't see the forest for the trees. His mind can be so focused on something that he doesn't notice what's right in front of him. He was doing everything in his power to find Mother, yet he couldn't sense that Rufus had her in his possession all along. Kadaj lives in the moment, dreaming of the future but with the inability to actually plan for it. His assumption is and always has been that Mother will guide him.

Kadaj is extremely emotional and can rapidly fluctuate from one to the next -- UNSTABLE. He can go from being amused to annoyed, heartbroken to calm, angry to stoic in the blink of an eye. His emotions are often expressed in his voice and body language as well. Though sometimes unpredictable in action, what he's feeling on the inside shows on the outside. Attempts to hide what he's feeling are either failed or non-existent. When he speaks of Mother with the hope of being reunited with her, a genuine smile will cross his lips and his eyes will sparkle. But remind him of the despair of still not knowing where she is, and you might wish you hadn't. He won't cry as much as his brother, Loz. Violence is more his outlet.

In spite of these things, Kadaj does possess the qualities of a leader. He's persuasive, even if it's the threat of violence that bends others to his will. Both Loz and Yazoo look to him for answers and commands. (This is probably what makes him a bit of a know-it-all at times.) The three brothers are extremely close, once three embodiments of the same man. Kadaj doesn't have to say a word to them. They know what to do, with barely a nod of his head to tell them. If he trusts anyone, it would be the two of them. But his role also puts the slightest distance between him and the other two remnants. Loz and Yazoo often work together, while Kadaj watches or carries out another part of their plan. He is the youngest and was also the first to enter the Lifestream alone.

Kadaj finds a great strength in his determination. He's relentless in his quest for any sign of Jenova or any other challenge he might take on. If he tires, it doesn't show, and if he gets discouraged it's only for a moment. But his energy has been wasted on wild goose chases in the past. At his peak, Kadaj can be boundless in his cruelty. He is quite capable of interrogation and torture if someone possesses information that he wants. The end justifies the means, and for him the end can only be Mother. His short fuse and emotional and mental instabilities makes him more dangerous at these moments. He is cocky and unafraid to enter a fight, though he's not constantly looking for one. His mind is always on their greater mission. Kadaj knows when to retreat or shift to plan B. He can be as intelligent as Sephiroth when his emotions don't impede his judgment, and not all battles are physical.

☓ Abilities:
Battle Abilities:
Souba - Kadaj's weapon of choice is a no ordinary katana. It possesses a second reinforced blade behind the first one, a darker "shadow" blade. This hidden blade gives Kadaj the advantage as it may not be readily noticed by an opponent. It can deal two slices instead of one. The slight distance between the two blades also makes it possible for him to catch another's blade between them and disarm a foe with the flick of his wrist. Like Sephiroth, Kadaj wields his sword with his left hand. He has a flashy, nontraditional style when he fights, often spinning Souba in his hand and twirling his own body around.

Materia:
Due to the unusual and unnatural circumstances surrounding his body (being manifested by Sephiroth's will), Kadaj was able to absorb Materia right into his body. He's shown using Fire, Lightening/Bolt, and Bahamut SIN (though this one can be nullified if need be). These same circumstances also enable him to turn his very body into a thick, black smoke.

Summons:
Shadow Creepers - They start as black streaks that race beneath the surface. Shadow Creepers manifest as large black quadraped monstrosities. They appear almost skeletal, with sharp claws, a beak-like mouth, and bony protrusions jutting from their shoulder blades. Spikes likewise line the creature's neck and along the underside of it's limbs. A Creeper's attack consists of it's sharp talons, snapping mouth, and long, razored tail. They're quick, able to keep up with a bike and leap at their prey from great distances. Kadaj and his brothers are able to summon and dismiss them at will. In spite of their fearsome appearance, they can be dispatched by sword, gun, or magical attack, rendering them to a black vapor.

Special Physical Abilities:
The Jenova Factor - Though the Lifestream returned him as more than just a larval stage of Sephiroth, he is still his mother's son. He possesses the physical advantages of a SOLDIER in terms of strength, stamina, but especially speed. Kadaj's quick reflexes enable him to leap over a motorcycle spinning out of control towards him without a second thought. He's an acrobatic fighter who can even block bullets with his blade. He's able to leap great heights and distances effortlessly. Kadaj can also take punishment that a normal person could not. He can land gracefully after a fall that would've killed another.

☓ Weaknesses: Kadaj's emotional instability is without a doubt his greatest weakness and it would not be impossible to exploit and manipulate him because of it. Being alone is another weakness, as he's only known life alongside his two brothers.
☓ Strengths: Battle prowess - Being a remnant of Sephiroth is nothing to sneeze at. He's strong, quick, and highly skilled with Souba. His determination is another strength. Kadaj is a driven individual and not likely to give up when he sets his mind to something. He also has good leadership skills, though it takes a special breed to be willing to follow him.
