French Polynesia - Part 2: Fakarava and Nuku Hiva for the Marquesas Arts Festival

I decided to split up the Aranui write-up because it was getting long.

We had a minor kerfuffle about the timing of our transfer from the Intercontinental to the dock for the Aranui, but it was easy enough to take a taxi. The boarding process was straightforward enough, and I was pleased to see that my cabin looked quite comfortable.

Now, THAT'S a church I wouldn't mind visiting.

I've spent much time in the Cook Islands but this place looks so much more enticing. Thanks for the pics.

Why were you in the Cook Islands? It's somewhere I haven't been (yet) though somebody I used to work with retired to Rarotonga.

My favorite church in the Pacific region is St. Benedict's in the town of Captain Cook, in the southern part of the Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii.

I'm not surprised a co-working you knew retired there. Although, if it's still the same, only locals can purchase property.

The husband and I went once and were sold on the place. It was so inexpensive and friendly, and we soon met like-minded folks. Remember, I was Christian at that time. We flew down every year for 11 years and stayed a month. It was also very affordable. We paid $14 (US) a night for a "cabin."

Beautiful photos - and I really appreciate all those bright colours on a dull, wintry day here!

It sounds really interesting to get talks and documentaries on the cruise. And your cabin looks pretty nice.

Lectures (and, to a lesser extent, documentaries) are pretty common on small ships, especially in off-the-beaten-track destinations. There were also some less enlightening activities, but it was easy to avoid things like 80's night or karaoke.

And the cabin was comfortable enough.
