Once again I have had a wonderful but frustrating Yuletide.

First: my gifts.
I received two fabulous presents. Both apparently were pinch-hits as the person originally assigned was unable to complete a story:

King and the Maiden
Length: 7,509 words
This is another chapter in Kipling's Stalky & Co and masterfully written.

King and the Maiden is just the Best Story Ever! Really. The story I received was excellent, but yours left it standing on the start line. I envy you having received it. My recipient seems to have liked my story, but I do feel I could have written something better.

"King" will definitely go down in the annals.

I see you like Swallows and Amazons. I suggest you try: The Road to Rio.

As it happens I know both fandoms (and the author - not me - though I won't spoil the fun and let on who it is before the New Year) but you really don't need to know both to make sense of it. It starts with the 'other' fandom but if you persevere you will find it soon turns into a true S&A adventure.

I am ahead of you! I read, and enjoyed, that story even though I don't know the other fandom (although it sounds like one I should like). I spent most of Christmas afternoon and evening browsing this year's stories!
