Thanks - on to the 'blood' prompt, now! I may not be able to put it all together in time for this week as this week is really very busy (participating in fic-corner story exchange and the deadline in 1st Sept) but I will make sure once all four parts are pulled together that BF gets a look at the full work.

Ditto to urb_bana's comments, beginning to end. I like the details we learned of the mother here. Well done, watson :)

Amazing how one abnormal happening can upset one so much. But... the routine of her life still ran through her head like a check list. The Plums!!! oh she must get those bottled!

This is delightful... so like my days were. Church, the Ladies Meetings, choir, which hat... and looking a bit more than just oneself. Took me back about fifty years this did.

Thanks so much... you've caught it so well. Did she ride a bike to the Vicarage? with a basket on the front? I did!

Oh dear... will we learn more of Laurie?

Probably not in this story. Thanks for the endorsement I got the details right. (Yes, those plums will get mushy if she doesn't preserve them soon.)

Nothing like looking in a mirror to pull a woman out of her own head so she can put it back on right.

I agreed with what urb_banal said, but she got here first.

Three weeks into the month and still turning up! You're becoming a regular :)

Yes, a hat is a must at that time! It so well places her in her time (as I always pictured it, at the very least, since I am most definitely a millenial-era girl). Now, I never think of hats, except for maybe the odd moment in the summer where I think a ballcap might be a good idea to keep the sun out of my eyes. But that's all a hat would be to me; a practical item. To her it is much more than that, it is an extension of herself, and something quite necessary to her daily routine.

There were so many rules about hats back then. Her 'best' hat is a little shabby and I made her gardening hat also shabby. But if she had a brand spanking new gardening hat she still wouldn't dream of wearing it to the vicarage (unless she was planning to do some gardening on a grave). Mind you, there was also a whole system of hand-me-downs so one's best hat was relegated to second best when a new one was bought. And the skin care! What Lucy would have thought of the make up some people wear nowadays! Yes all that helped to root her into her class and her period. Thanks for commenting.
