John was sleeping on the couch and Grace was in her bassinette, Rodney had just put Nathan down for his nap and that left him with nothing to do. He thought about leaning back in Ronon’s big chair and making it family naptime, but he wasn’t tired.
John moaned lightly in his sleep and Rodney looked over, smiled softly and got an idea for how to spend his time. He went down to the basement and pulled the DVD off the shelf. He had everything organized down to the day, so he knew approximately where it was. He checked the labels until he found the right one, and took it up to the living room and put it in the DVD player. He fast forwarded until he got to the part he was looking for, and he got a little misty eyed when it started playing at normal speed.
On the screen, John was in the nursery rocking Nathan. The sun was setting and since the lights in the room were off, it had a soft almost romantic glow. Nathan was fifteen days old, fifteen days, twelve hours, nine minutes and 45 seconds to be exact. His tiny dark haired head was cradled in the crook of John’s elbow and his little bottom was cupped in John’s hand. John was gently running his other hand over Nathan’s fuzzy hair, and singing softly. Rodney recognized the song, although he hadn’t heard it in a long time. It was a John Lennon song, and while Rodney didn’t really like John Lennon, he loved that song and it fit their son perfectly.
Rodney wiped a tear away, this bit of his life always brought him to tears, it was the absolute most beautiful thing he’d witnessed, second only to the birth of his children. He focused his attention back on the TV; John was still singing… he’d started the song over, probably for the sake of Rodney and his camera.
“Close your eyes, have no fear. The monster’s gone, he’s on the run and your daddy’s here. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy.”
When John sang “your daddy’s here,” he looked up and smiled at Rodney, and every time Rodney saw that, back to and including the time when he was recording it, he got goose bumps on his arms and a little flutter in his belly. Nathan was their son, they were his daddies, and that was one of the most wonderful feelings Rodney’d ever had.
“You’re watching that again?”
Rodney looked over at his sleepy sounding husband and smiled. “Of course I’m watching it again.”
“Aren’t you tired of hearing me sing that song?” John asked.
“No, and I never will be, this is video of my two favorite men having a fluffy private bedroom moment. I think if someone wanted to know what my favorite memory was, it would have to be this.” Rodney got off Ronon’s chair and went over to John, he sat beside his hip. Being mindful of John’s incision, Rodney leaned down and kissed him softly on the mouth.
“I love you,” he whispered when the kiss broke.
John smiled sleepily and nodded. “I love you too, Rodney.”
Rodney was about to kiss John again when they heard the tiny squeaky ‘Grace is hungry’ cry. Rodney huffed out a small laugh. “Seriously, I have no idea how that child can come from you and I and be that quiet.”
John laughed and sat up, carefully pulling his legs from behind Rodney. “I’ll get her, you get the bottle started, we’ll meet somewhere in the middle.”
Rodney kissed him, “Don’t we always?” he asked quietly. “Alright, here I go, don’t hurt yourself.” He got up and went to start the bottle in the warmer, but he didn’t go down the hall, he stopped at corner and watched John lift their daughter out of her bassinette. He held her in the same way he’d held Nathan in the video and sat on the couch with her.
“Hey there princess,” He said softly. “Daddy’s getting your bottle, but until it’s ready, how shall we spend our time together?”
Rodney smiled and looked up at the camera that was trained on the couch. There was no way he was going to chance missing another beautiful moment. He sighed, he could watch John with Grace and Nathan all day, but Grace was hungry. He smiled again and turned toward the kitchen to get Grace’s bottle.
