Sticking Your Neck Out
It was clear to Hatori early on that he and Yanase would butt heads. The two had opposing personalities and the one thing they had in common was the most troublesome of all.
Hatori knew, felt like he'd always known, that he was in love with Chiaki. What he hadn't been ready to face was a rival. And Yanase made for a challenging one. He knew just what offhand comments to make to rile up Hatori and leave Chiaki unsuspecting. The bastard liked to push his buttons, take advantage of openings.
But Hatori also knew, and could understand better than anyone, that Yanase loved Chiaki much as he himself did. He could see it in the ways he looked at Chiaki and in the ways he didn't, always keeping one eye on him. Hatori knew what it was like to not have those looks understood by the one you treasure most, how it sears dully like an open wound. He knew what it was like when that wound festered, how hard it could get to be near him and how easy and great it was when you felt stable, when you felt like you couldn't imagine yourself anywhere else.
Both men understood these things of each other, a strange sort of mutual trust. But unknown was the future that lay ahead for their feelings, and it was downright terrifying. Hatori knew he could handle Yanase, had begrudgingly earned a tiny bit of respect for the guy somewhere along the way, and the two could drive out a third rival, but the fear of what would happen were either of them to tell Chiaki of the other's feelings was a constant threat. It became an understanding, no, an unspoken rule that such underhanded tactics were simply too low.
Chiaki, naive as always, was clueless about the silent war building around him. The innocent source of it all. It was for him that they tolerated being in the same room together. Because what it came down to was who would cross that bridge first - put themselves out there for Chiaki to reject - and who would be there to pick up the pieces, assuming they were both out of luck.

Two Sides of the Same Coin
"You're in love with him, aren't you?"
Yuu was stretched out on Chiaki's bed, flipping through the pages of a magazine. His tone was nonchalant.
Yoshiyuki maintained a stoic expression, something he'd always been good at. He was just glad Yuu had waited until Chiaki left the room to get them drinks, not that he thought Yuu was foolish enough to do otherwise. He was a manipulative little snot, the ever-present chip on Yoshiyuki’s shoulder since they were first-years in middle school. Their rivalry had been going on for the better part of five years. Yoshiyuki got the feeling that he'd subconsciously been waiting for Yuu to bring this topic up.
"How is that any of your business?"
"Because, as you've probably already guessed, we're in the same boat."
Yuu sat up and met Yoshiyuki's harsh stare. He smiled at him.
"...And? Want to shake hands on it or something?" Yoshiyuki said.
"What makes you think I want to touch you unnecessarily?" Yuu said coldly. Yoshiyuki might have been offended did he not share the same sentiment.
The door opened.
"Sorry it took so long! Mom was arguing with me about snacks - Umm, you guys?" Chiaki could feel the heavy tension between the two of them, both of which had moved little since they'd settled into their usual spots in Chiaki's room but were now sitting up and facing each other. "Is everything okay?"
Yuu was the first to look away and up at Chiaki.
"Yeah, just," Yuu sneaked a glance once more at Yoshiyuki, "...discussing how much we’re like two sides of the same coin, isn't that right, Hatori?"
Yoshiyuki narrowed his eyes and returned them to the book in his lap.
