You pose some very very good questions here. If I may share with you some thoughts I had when I began learning more about Sri Lanka, in preparation for working with Nadini. I would be interested to get your perspective being in South Africa. I am not sure how much you know about Sri Lanka, so forgive me if I am telling you what you already know. In short, Sri Lanka is the pearl of the Indian Ocean, tarnished by ethnic conflict, primarily between the Tamil and the Sinhalese. I met a few weeks ago with a Tamil Phd student who just returned from Sri Lanka to discuss the work I will be doing on suicide prevention with, Nandini, the only Sinhalese scholar at UCLA. Sri Lanka has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, which has been attributed to unemployment, financial problems and losses suffered by the failure of crops (some have made direct connects to the failure of the Green Revolution).
