coffeejunkii Arthur yanked hard on the reigns of his horse, bringing the poor animal to rest. He ran his hand over its mane in apology. "We've been out here for hours." If Merlin didn't stop mucking about in the water soon, he would leave without him. "Are you certain this is the correct pond? Perhaps you've mistaken it with another lake that you threw a 'very nice sword' into."
"It's here," Merlin insisted.
He'd had enough. Arthur rolled his eyes and led his horse toward the shoreline. Magic sword at the bottom of a pond or no, night would close around them and leave them ill-prepared.

Merlin's heart sank into his stomach. He had thought sending the sword into the lake would keep it out of harms way. Hiding it had been the only option. The sword had been too powerful to leave lying about.
Only, he had left it lying about. Even if it should have been stuck in the mud at the bottom of a pond.
Sighing, he urged his own horse forward, letting his gaze linger on the still water. A flash of light caught his eyes and the horse reared back. Merlin toppled off the horse into the pond, letting out a startled yelp when he hit the water backside first.

"Merlin!"
Arthur jumped off his horse in a fluid glide, splashing down in the water. He scanned the surface of the pond as his pulse pounded a fierce rhythm against the inside of his ears. Did Merlin need to end every adventure in disaster? He grappled with his armor, loosening the fastenings as hurriedly as he could. His fingers kept slipping over the straps and each passing second felt like an eternity.
Arthur had only removed his breastplate when the surface rippled. Merlin reappeared flailing and gasping, eyes round in his face. And, clasped tight in both his hands, was a sword.
"You idiot!" Arthur roared, wading further into the water to meet Merlin. He yanked the sword from Merlin's loosed grip and tossed it furiously toward the shore. It arched beautifully and landed with a deadened thud on the dirt. Arthur grabbed one of Merlin's ear and sharply tugged on it. "You do that again, I'll leave you in the stocks for a month."
Merlin swayed under a blast of cold wind, forcing Arthur to gather Merlin close whether he wished to or not--not being the correct answer. But, even with chattering teeth and a blueish cast to his lips, Merlin replied, "Yes, sire."
And he grinned.
And now a new song to get stuck in your head. You can all thank me later. *G*
