Some Days Are Diamonds

Jul 13, 2010 11:40

And yesterday was worth more to me than any diamond one could find. Even though we sometimes plan for wonderful days, and hope it turns out that way; yesterday was planned, and it turned out to be much more rewarding than our first anticipation.

A friend from one of the universities in South Dakota was doing research on burrowing owls, I met her ( Read more... )

What a lovely day! I often wished that I knew birds by their calls.

Same here; I know so few; your remark reminded me of my niece going with bird watchers in North Dakota. They would hear a bird and mark it down on their list, after several times she finally said....now wait a minute, you are identifying by sound, i want to see the bird...she made her point.
If I were to get into identifying by sound, I know for certain I will need my hearing checked....

The first time I saw a burrowing owl bow it was a magical experience, you can't help but fall in love with them.
Now I have to find out all about dick cissels never heard of them before.

I went looking for dickcissels and found this website. Very interesting.http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/infocenter.html On the left hand side of the page, after clicking on the birds name, you can hear what some of them sound like by clicking on song. Not all of them have the song recorded but the dickcissel's song was recorded.

Thanks for the info; Kris told me she had a recording of all of the bird calls, and perhaps I can download them from this site. She is a great person to know, and I am so fortunate to have met her. I had never seen a dickcissel until this spring when we were playing cribbage and this bird was at the feeder, and my friend kept saying, will you play? will you please play? and finally, I got the book and I was so excited; of course he teased me but he enjoyed it, too.
I am meeting the graduate student Tuesday to show him the owl burrows; this should be an interesting year coming up for the rest of this one and the next one. Though I must confess, in my little world, it is all interesting.

When we see the animals that surround us each day
Doing they form of greeting to us with their wisdom
It makes the heart/mind reach out to touch each one that we see
Nothing is lost to those that see the beauty of life
The singing of the birds, the laughter of the winds in the tree tops
The warmth of the sun, the coolness of the full moon at night
These are the joys of life my dear friend
For within you beats a heart of joy and wonderment
To see life as it truly is.
