Chapter 24. So Typical

Asuka stood outside the apartment as she waited for it to open. Her head was still filled with the words Nichkhun had said to her last night. “What about Taecyeon?” “Just leave us a note and go?” “You have any idea how it affected the members?” “Don’t do this again.” The sharp tone in his voice played in her head over and over again, like a broken record. She sent him a text message earlier, explaining she would staying at Jody’s for the rest of her short stay in Seoul.

“Suka? What are you doing here?” a voice brought her out of her thoughts.

“Happy Birthday Jody!” she plastered on a smile and passed the younger girl a box. Her face lit up and brought the older girl in for a hug.

As much as she knew how Asuka was not the hugging-touchy-feely type she did it anyway. It had been a year since she had seen her childhood friend. She gestured for her to come in and saw the suitcases she brought with her.

“How long you staying for?” For such an innocent question, it made Asuka feel heavy. Well it was no use lying now. Knowing Nichkhun, the members probably already knew about her current situation even though they hadn’t mentioned anything last night. She was hoping her dear best friend didn’t say anything although she wasn’t counting on it.

“Uhh…not long. Actually I’m going back in day after tomorrow,” her voice came out as a whisper. It made her friend’s eyes widen.

“What? That short? When did you get here?” Jody joined her own the sofa.

Her place still looked more like, well home now as the last time she came there were still boxes everywhere. There were cute, little toys placed in various corners, she had even spotted the infamous pink chequered aprons Jody and Nichkhun would don on when they were cooking.

“I was actually supposed to arrive today and stay until February for Chinese New Year, but Dax booked my flight too early and I ended up arriving here on Saturday. Then the Head of Department asked, well ordered me to come back for Saturday to talk about my results and a possible career,”

Jody just nodded as she listened to the elder’s story. She asked where she was staying the past three days and she had said that Nichkhun let her stay with him (well it was Taecyeon who actually said that but she wasn’t gonna tell her that. She’d have a huge hissy fit). Asuka stopped talking when she found that Jody was not her usual hyper self.

“Jody, what’s wrong?” she shook her head and continued to stare at the ground.

“Oi, I know when something’s wrong with you. You’re hardly like this,” even though they hadn’t seen each other she still knew everything about Jody. It was the same with Nichkhun.

“Fine,” Jody sighed as she gave in. “It’s just that everyone seems to have forgotten my birthday,” Asuka tilted her head to the side, confused. Jody sighed again. “Usually Khunnie and the 2PM-oppas would be here for breakfast, I’d get a big surprise at school and it’d be the best day ever but today...nothing. Not even a ‘Happy Birthday’,” Jody pouted and folded her arms. Her hair was still just touching her shoulders. She did look like she had slightly matured but she was still the same person two years ago.

“Aren’t you seeing the guys for dinner?” Asuka questioned careful not to blurt out the surprise party.

“Yeah and that’s the only thing I have to look forward to. And then you show up which has been like the highlight of my day. Doesn’t that sound depressing?”

“Well then I guess we gotta get out of this place. C’mon, let’s have a birthday treat, huh? You and me. We have a lot to catch up on.” She dragged Jody off the sofa and out the house.

They arrived at a nearby ice-cream parlour which seemed strangely deserted for it was quite popular.

Typical of A to pick ice-cream out of all places Jody thought to herself. That girl loved her ice-cream.

“You forget that it’s nearing winter here A,” she only shrugged.

“Jody-ah, how are you?” the middle aged lady at the counter greeted Jody.

“Hey ahjumma. I’m good thanks,” Jody bowed and Asuka followed. Jody giggled at the 120 degree bow she did.

“Who’s your friend? She looks familiar,” she turned her gaze to Asuka and looked her up and down. Asuka turned away at the uncomfortable situation.

“Ah this here is my unni, Asuka Lee,” she motioned towards the older female. She just bowed and said hello.

“Oh! You’re that girl who came everyday last two summers with that handsome boy. Aigoo, what was his name? Woo, Jang Woo something?” the ahjumma struggled to remember. A small smile played on Asuka’s lips.

“Jang Wooyoung,” she corrected her. She and Wooyoung had come to the ice-cream parlour every day after discovering it on one of his free days. He had finally found someone who loved ice-cream as much as he did.

“Ah, that’s the one. Was he your boyfriend?” Asuka chuckled and shook her head. “Oh that’s a pity. You two looked good together.”

Jody nudged her friend as the ahjumma had said that. Asuka rolled her eyes.

“Anyway, what are you doing here during school hours Jody-ah?”

“It was half day today ahjumma. Unni just came from New Zealand to visit me as a surprise for my birthday,” Asuka gave a nod towards the lady. She wondered how Jody and the ahjumma were acquainted. Did she come here often?

“Oh Happy Birthday Jody! That was very nice of your unni. Take a seat you two and I’ll bring out your favourite ice-cream, on the house.” The ahjumma smiled as the two bowed and took a seat.

“How do you know her so well?” Asuka asked as soon as they were seated.

“I come here a lot during summer with my school friends. I’m amazed she can still remember you, and Wooyoung-oppa,” she said with that cheer back in her voice.

All that came out was a small “oh” from her mouth. The ahjumma brought out two bowls of ice-cream - a green tea one for Asuka and a red bean and vanilla with a lit candle for Jody.

“Thank you. I attend university back home actually. We’re on break now. How did you still remember my favourite?” Asuka questioned the lady.

“I don’t forget a pretty face and good customer like you,” Asuka nodded, embarrassed and muttered another thank you as she walked off. “You gonna make a wish before that candle melts your ice-cream?”

Jody quickly clasped her hands together, made a wish and blew out the candle. They ate ice-cream and Asuka asked Jody how Korea was treating her and she asked how it was back home. She was curious what her unni had gotten up to with 2PM the last few days.

“WHAT YOU AND TAECYEON-OPPA?!?!”

Asuka jumped back at the excited high school senior. She placed a finger over her mouth signalling for her to hush. This was Korea and he was a well-known idol. Luckily the parlour had only two customers, her and Jody. And the ahjumma didn’t seem to know much about 2PM as she looked up once but went back to her book. She didn’t even comment on who Wooyoung was anyway. Wait, oppa. First ahjumma then unni and now oppa. Wow, she really was turning Korean.

“It’s nothing okay. It’s not like we’re a couple or anything,” she shrunk back into her seat. She wondered how Taecyeon would take the news.

“But you like him and he likes you. I saw it from the first moment you two met each other. There was something there. At first, I was thinking maybe you and Wooyoung-oppa would be good together because of all those late night and afternoon trips out but now that…”

Asuka tuned out. She couldn’t bear to listen to her friend go on and on about this. She had started comparing her situation to romantic comedies and dramas.

“Jode, this is nothing to fangirl about, okay?” Asuka stated but Jody just continued saying how it’d be so cool if she and Taecyeon finally got together. Asuka had already listened to one fangirl session and now she was in for another.  She banged her head on a non-existing wall.

“Oh but it is unni. You and Taecyeon-oppa finally together,” she clasped her hands together and gushed. This made Asuka sink even lower into her seat. “You do like him don’t you?” Jody stopped momentarily.

“I don’t want to hurt him anymore than I already can. Maybe if I were staying in Seoul permanently or even for the four months I was supposed be staying…” her words drifted off as she fidgeted with her spoon.

“I asked you a question.”

Asuka looked up at the girl with a slight scowl.

Jody exhaled loudly, “Ughh you two are a match made in heaven,” she flailed her hands up.

Asuka could’ve sworn her friend had gone slightly crazy (okay slightly was an understatement) whilst studying here. The fangirlism must’ve gotten to her too. If Lexi and Jody were in the same room, Asuka would never see the world the same way again. She shivered at that thought.

“Do. You. Like. Ok. Taec. Yeon?” She repeated. Asuka slumped back down in her seat once again and drew circles in her melted ice-cream.

“Like you wouldn’t believe,” she mumbled. She heard a squeal and saw another smile grow on Jody’s face. “It’s not funny,” she looked up with annoyance. “Hey, stop laughing,” she threw a clean napkin at her.

“Aigoo unni, you’ve got it bad for oppa,” Jody teased. “I've heard that tone before. The last time you were like this was with, ugh, what’s his face, Dan Yang? You two were so cute together but you and Taecyeon-oppa is H.O.T. hot!” She wiggled her eyebrows which earned a kick from Asuka. “Unniiiii,” Jody whined.

“What’s with this whole ‘unni’ business anyway? I seriously think your English is getting worse. You’ve been replying to me in Korean this whole time,” Asuka scoffed.

“Whyyy? Well, you’re Korean’s certainly improved,” Jody threw in a back-handed comment.

As soon as Jody and Asuka got back to Jody’s apartment they saw a large black box with a silver ribbon on it. Jody picked it up as she went inside. She placed it on the coffee table as Asuka went to place her bag in the guest room. Jody examined the package, possibly who sent it or the very least who it was for. She found a small silver envelope tucked under the neatly tied bow. She was curious to see who sent the package but felt it was best to leave it.

“Yo Suke, the package is for you,” she shouted to Asuka who came out of the guest room. Jody pointed to the box and walked off to the kitchen. Asuka walked towards the box and picked it up. She opened the envelope and held the box in her other hand as she walked back into the guest room. As soon as she opened the envelope a small smile had grew on her face.

Don’t forget, it’s Black Tie tonight. I don’t want you to turn up in shorts and a tank. Again. kkk
Can’t wait to see you ^-^ missing you already AND don’t be late   - Taec

She chuckled at the interesting note paired with the gift. It was so like Taecyeon to do such a thing. Opening the box, she found that same red dress he had made her try on, that same un-fateful (or was it fateful) day they had come across with that encounter which triggered…a lot of events. Underneath the dress she had also found that same pair of clear heels. Something clicked in her head.

So that’s why he took my bags and asked what I thought of the dress. Ackk why didn’t I see that? Because you’re oblivious, that’s why. “Ughh,” she scoffed.

It was bad enough when she was talking to herself, but when she was contradicting herself in the same aloud conversation was just crazy. She closed the box (yeah it was one of those fancy ones with the tissue paper wrapping) and chucked it on the floor. She lay back on her bed and stared at the ceiling.

“Ok Taecyeon, I’m sorry.”
