Chapter 34. Why Don’t You Answer the Phone?

As soon as Asuka arrived back at her apartment she dumped her yellow backpack on one of the barstools and walked over to the answering machine. The number read seven new messages. 7? Didn’t Lexi pick up the phone around here?

She pressed the answering button on the machine and walked towards her fridge.

*Beep* Hi honey, it’s mum. Dinner tomorrow night at your cousin’s place. Be there at 7 and don’t be late.

She grabbed a can of lemonade and placed it on the bar countertop. She pulled out the other stool and took out her A3 portfolio that was sticking out of her bag.

*Beep* SIS!! Can you pick me up from school today? Thanks~

Asuka turned to look at the clock in the living room, 6:30pm. She sighed hoping her brother would’ve found a way home. School finished three hours ago. Seriously, wouldn’t Lexi have told her? She looked around the apartment. Where was Lexi?

*Beep* Hehe never mind, going to friend’s place. See you tomorrow.

She shook her head. It was so typical of her brother to change plans last minute. She reached for the laptop on the far end of the countertop beside the phone.

Asuka flipped open the laptop and pressed the power button to resume it from sleep. She turned around to get her flash drive when her eyes landed on the page opened up on the internet browser:

Taecyeon and Jessica couple rumor denied
October 29, 2010

...The Korea Herald reported, that both JYP Entertainment and SM Entertainment have stated that Taecyeon and Jessica dating is not true...

She felt a sudden relief wash over her. She hadn’t been keeping up with the Korean industry besides 2PM’s comeback performances. She had walked passed Lexi one night reading up on the article, Lexi wasn’t quick enough to close the window and she spotted a headline which made her heart stop.

Taecyeon had called Asuka up to explain and they ended up having a heated argument over the phone. She hadn’t been keeping in contact with him, or any of 2PM for that matter, because of the portfolio and presentation she had to complete in two months. He was explaining that he would never cheat on her and she snapped back that they weren’t even an actual couple. He told her that a phone call once a week would be nice instead of never hearing from her and that she could at least answer his calls.

*Beep*  Asuka, this is Tina. Sorry but we’re pushing up the due date to the 12th instead of the 19th. You’ll get your marks on the Monday, 22nd. Sorry again, good luck on getting it done. They workshop will be open if you need to use it. Bye.

She leaned back in her chair. That was this Friday, two days from now. She was supposed to get one more week to finish her project and now that she was losing that time she needed, there was no way she could relax now. Asuka flipped through her notebook and counted the pages she still needed to complete.  Ten pages by Friday, no way!

*Beep* A, it’s Khun. Taec’s going crazy with you not calling or answering his calls. What actually happened between you two? If you’re busy at least tell him that. I’m getting worried too, as well as the rest of the guys here. Just…call okay?

*Beep* Suka-yangie, Wooyoungie here. Just wanted to tell you that that thing with Taecyeon-hyung and Jessica isn’t true okay? You probably saw it already but Taec is starting to get paranoid that you might not believe what the companies said. Don’t be sad okay? I miss youu~ Call meee~

Nichkhun and Wooyoung were the only ones she had still contacted over the last couple months. For some unknown reason, Asuka had become even closer to Wooyoung than she was before.

*Beep* Hey, it’s me.

Asuka froze at the sound of that deep, husky tone.

Umm…how’s uni? Hah, who am I kidding, I didn’t call because of that. Why aren’t you picking up? All my calls are going straight to voicemail. I’m sorry…I shouldn’t have, I should have put up more of a fight. Why I didn’t I don’t know but I was caught off guard. When you said that, I didn’t know what to say. It was like, what do I say? If I say no, we can’t, we’d probably break up and if I said yes, well look where that got us. Uh…I guess I just wanna see you...Honestly I can’t stand this whole “break up” thing…Just, please… just one call. Just to hear your voice or anything…I miss you.

Taking a deep breath, Asuka turned her attention back to her portfolio. She opened a new word document and pulled out her final designs and photos of her final product. She headed the new document with ‘EVALUATION’ and pressed the enter button to move her cursor to a new line.  The cursor blinked continuously as it stayed in the same position, the document still blank. Asuka’s mind kept going back to his message and what had happened a week back. She couldn’t concentrate with all these thoughts, and the heat in the apartment wasn’t helping. She needed a cold shower.

Leaning her head against the tiled wall, she let the cool water fall against her body, travelling down her hair, to her back and down her legs to the vinyl tiled flooring of the shower cubicle. She thought about it over and over again whether to pick up Taecyeon’s calls. Asuka knew the right thing to do was to answer it but something in her just could not handle a conversation with the Lead Rapper right now.

Turning the water faucet off, she wiped herself down and pulled on a pair of shorts and a purple t-shirt. She didn’t even take notice that her roommate had come home and greeted her as Asuka picked up the phone and punched in the number automatically, silently hoping that one person would pick up.

It had been another day filled with schedules when 2PM had arrived back at the dorm around 3:00pm. They had been up at the crack of dawn practicing and straight after that they had filming to go to and interviews and variety show appearances.

The boys went to do their own things as they had the rest of the day off (thankfully) and took this time to just relax. Junsu went to his room to tidy up, Chansung scrambled around in the kitchen for something to eat, Junho went to his bedroom to sleep, Wooyoung splayed himself on his bed/couch and Nichkhun had yet to come back from his filming with Victoria for We Got Married.

Taecyeon had followed Chansung into the kitchen and asked the younger to pass him a can of beer and whatever snacks he could find as he sat himself down on the dining table after pressing the button on their phone.

Most of the messages were from their parents and siblings saying that they hope their boys were doing well and not overworking themselves to hard. Chansung dumped a can and snacks onto the table in front of Taecyeon before walking out of the kitchen and joining Wooyoung in the lounge.

…I’m looking forward to meeting this Victoria person. You seem to really like her, Nichkhun. Do you? Treat her well okay, I know you always do but I’m your mother and I’m supposed to say these things. Anyways take care and don’t overwork yourself. You and the other boys need a break too alright. Love you Nichkhun, see you soon.

“Was that my mom again?” Nichkhun suddenly appeared, walking into the kitchen and grabbing a drink from their fridge.

“Yep. She’s looking forward to meeting Victoria, what are you gonna do, Khunnie?” Taecyeon teased, earning a packet of chips coming towards his face. Although Taecyeon found fun in teasing Nichkhun about his virtual wife he did feel sorry for the older member. He knew Nichkhun liked Victoria but recently he had seen that the older male had become frustrated with her. He liked her, but not in that way as he put out to be in interviews.

Nichkhun had complained about how he didn’t understand Victoria - one minute she’d be all aegyo-like and the next she was mad. Taecyeon still found amusement in his member’s frustration but knew that it was hard for Nichkhun. He was bringing Victoria to Thailand in a few weeks and had to introduce her to his family. But Nichkhun was going for work as well as to see his family so he had plentiful of things to occupy himself with.

*Beep* Uhh…Taec, you there?

The two males both stopped at the sound of the voice on the answering machine. Nichkhun’s gaze met with Taecyeon’s and he contemplated on whether or not to leave Taecyeon alone. He was about to make was way passed the table and out the door when he felt a hold on his shirt. He looked down to see Taecyeon’s hand and took it as a sign for him to stay.

Nichkhun pulled up a chair and waited for the rest of the message to play, taking glances every now and then to see if he could read Taecyeon’s expression but it remained blank and unreadable.

I take not since I’m talking to your answering machine. I’m kinda glad though, I think it’s easier for me to say this when I’m talking to myself haha. I’m sorry for not answering your calls, I was just…scared? I don’t even know myself…I guess I just didn’t know what I would say. Anyway, I’m the one that should apologise. I shouldn’t have said those things and you were right. I was being jealous, whether I had to admit it I was. I can’t…ugh…I just don’t know what it is but I don’t like the feeling I get when you’re around other girls,  idols no less. Ahh, I’m sorry. I miss you too…and this whole break up shit…it was wrong of me. I was…you know…ugh see, I can’t even talk to a machine. I should stop before I say something I will regret again…take care and don’t overwork yourself alright? I miss the guys as well, sorry I haven’t called guys, I’ve been busy and all. Miss you…all of you.

There was an audible sigh from Taecyeon as the message finished. Nichkhun couldn’t take seeing this from the two people he cared about. Abruptly he stood up and called for a group meeting in the lounge.

The members gathered slowly in the living room as Nichkhun planned on what he was about to say. He had already spent the whole day preparing and planning for this when his members thought he was busy filming We Got Married when he and the manager were planning this. It was perfect and he had checked that it wouldn’t clash with any schedules.

“So what’s this meeting about, Khun-hyung?” Junho asked, still rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.

“Pack your things. We’re having a little break starting from tomorrow.” He watched his members’ eyes widen and eyebrows rise respectively. A mischievous smile played on Nichkhun’s lips and the rest of 2PM was suddenly scared of what this Thai Prince was planning.

“What are you playing at, Khun-hyung?” the maknae asked, his curiosity slowly building.

“Just make sure you’re all packed by tomorrow noon. Oh and pack your summer clothes, it’s gonna be hot there.” And with that Nichkhun walked to his bedroom and pulled out his suitcase, placing it on his bed. He checked the six tickets he had bought and double checked the time and place, making sure that his plan would not fail.

He wasn’t doing this just for Taecyeon, but himself and his fellow band mates as well. They were all due for a much needed break.
