Chapter List 1 | Trainee Days
Jay thinks it was because he was so obedient to his mother that he ended up in this place, JYP Entertainment. Actually, it was her fault, she made him audition and being the good son he was he went. He wasn’t completely blaming his mother for this, but he would’ve never thought of auditioning for such a thing if it wasn’t for her.
He never thought he would never get in, but Park Jinyoung said yes and he was on the next plane out. To Seoul that is. If Jay knew that passing the auditions meant moving from Seattle to Seoul, he probably would’ve never auditioned. Even though he was of Korean descent, he couldn’t speak the language nor could he understand half of it. He always spoke in English to his parents and brother, and even if his grandparents were to speak in Korean, the reply from his mouth would always be in English.
When he arrived at the company, it was no surprise that no one there spoke English, and that meant learning Korean. He was grouped with a couple of trainees; some ssanti-like freak Jo Kwon a.k.a Kkap Kwon (yes, he picked up a few Korean words from some of the trainees and workers) and this Daegu gangsta Kim Junsu, or as he stylised his name as Jun2daKay or Jun.K to which Jay preferred over Kkap Kwon any day. Unfortunately, they too spoke only Korean and that meant only one thing, enrolling in a Korean language class, as if training 24/7 didn’t suck enough already.
So when Taecyeon entered the company, Jay, well it was Jaebeom now, was kinda ecstatic that there would be another English speaking trainee, finally someone he could communicate with. Except he wasn’t expecting the new guy from Boston to be this freakishly tall, large eared, larger-than-average teeth, glasses wearing dork (dork was harsh, but nerd/geek was worse and there really was no other way to describe the newcomer).
Taec, (Taecyeon was too long to say) had horrible coordination, he couldn’t sing and he was too tall for his own good, especially when he couldn’t even control his own limbs. Jay had told him this over and over again while they practiced, but Taec seemed unfazed by his reprimands and just showed his toothy grin (which Jay felt like punching the younger in the face for every time he did so) and tried again. Jay didn’t know if Taec just kept a strong front or that he was just stupid, Jay went for the latter.
xXx
Taec still didn’t know why he decided to audition, and for a model no less, but he did and he didn’t regret, even if trainee was hell. Luckily for him, Seoul wasn’t really a new place to him, he did live in Busan for seven years before moving, and he was Korean and knew Korean so Taec knew he would be just fine here. That was until he met Park Jaebeom, or Jay Park as the Seattle b-boy liked to be called. He was the only other trainee, besides Nichkhun Horvejkul who had entered later, that spoke English and hailed from the States.
Park Jinyoung had assigned Taec to be Jay’s (he would give Taec a look every time he called him Jaebeom) translator, he got paid for it so at least he was making some money while in Seoul. Taec thought it was going to be easy, but he was wrong, it was one of the most hardest jobs he’d ever had. Jay never listened or took him seriously and he’d always be criticising him on every single thing Taec did.
He didn’t hate Jay, but was it too much to ask for a little compliment once in a while? Taec already corrected Jay’s English on a daily basis and helped translate what the instructors were asking of the trainees but yet Jay still acted hostile to him.
Every time they had dance practice, Jay would comment at how inflexible he was or how stiff his movements were. Jay would comment in English when they were taking a quick breather:
“You should use your height to your advantage,” or “Taec, you’re like a tree,” and the worse would often be along the lines of “How’d you even get into this company?” but he said that last comment to Khun as well as the latter couldn’t dance either.
Rumour was that Khun was recruited because of his looks, which Jay and Taec would somehow sit and watch the Thai and sigh at how ‘un-human’ and ‘freaking perfect’ he looked. That was probably one of the only things Taec and Jay actually agreed on.
Yeah, the comments were harsh, but Taec took all that Jay said into consideration and practiced hard. He didn’t know why, but he felt the need to prove to Jay that he is capable of flow movements and wasn’t as stiff as Jay put him out to be. Luckily, there were worse dancers than him, namingly Khun and Junsu.
Eventually, Jay stopped with the teasing, (he didn’t stop but they weren’t as bad as when Taec first entered the company) and now it was like wherever Taec was, Jay was. Everyone knew that, the trainees, instructors, directors, and it seemed that nobody really minded, although they would make fun of the two of how close they were and how they almost always were together in everything they did.
…
Although Taec and Jay were complete opposites - if we were to classify this in High School Clique term, Taec was that guy that got everything right and sat front row in class, whereas Jay would get D’s and F’s and was a back rower, complete opposites. But it seemed as though the two trainees became close, and you could say they were best friends now, but Jay wants to think it was because Taec spoke English and that was the reason, but Taec would beg to differ.
