I was surprised this morning when I got up to see the presidential results.
They were not what I had hoped for. I had hoped that despite the polls showing it close, that when it came down to it most folks would understand the choice.
But, what they understood is not what I understand.
And, I do understand that decades ago when I was young there did seem to be more hope. We were going to the moon. We were inventing new things. We were curing diseases.
The stories of the time imagined a future of wonders and excitement. Not that Captain Kirk didn’t run into problems, but he had computers, and warp drive and a good team of folks behind him.
But, here is where I seem to diverge from some people.
I don’t want to go back to the time we had those hopes.
I want to build what we hoped for.
I don’t want to go back to when we dreamed of Star Trek, I want to stand on the Enterprise.
And, I do what I can to help that come about.
No version of Star Trek had that an easy path. World wars, genocides, atrocities, and all sorts of evil lurked between when these shows were imagined and when they go to their goal. Almost every show, book and story from that time had a dark period humans had to get through to get out the other side.
I’m disappointed in how things happened.
But, I’m still designing new things. I’m still working on getting through the darkness to that dream.
I’m not going to stop.
