Wow! That is quite a story. Lots to unpack. But I'll focus on how kind your brother and you were to each other. That's worth a lot. And what a lovely, meaningful gift to have now. I look forward to finding out what you do with them.

About a year ago, my dad asked me to let him know what things of his I wanted to inherit. I told him I wanted his scrimshaw walrus tusk, from his hike across Greenland in the 70s. I thought he was going to just give it to me then, because it had been packed away in a box in the shed for so many years. But when we dug it out, I think all the memories flooded back, and he said he wasn't ready to let go of it yet. It's now on display in his office, and that makes me happy. (I do want it some day though.)

That is such a great gift! I loved seeing pictures of scrimshaw in my history books. Even if the teacher barely covered Whaling or the culture. My mom lived in Alaska for a while during the period it became a state. She had put away some Inuit Bone carvings. She would bring them out along with her Inuit toys made with real animals. I have no idea where they are in her house but when I help dad go through all that stuff, when he feels willing to, I will take lots of pictures!
