Sports

I'm not one for sports in general, but sometimes a sporting event just manages to encapsulate a great story. None of the paragraphs and paragraphs of text in a novel, nor exposition in a movie, to establish the characters: you understand that these are real-life people, and so the sport itself can be distilled to just the bare essence of the story ( Read more... )

It's been a pretty amazing day all-around. Usain Bolt, and the women's marathon too -- the winner of the marathon is a 38-year-old mom who broke from the pack with 10-15 km to go, and ran by herself for the last hour.

Not to mention Dara Torres -- the 41-year-old silver medalist in both the 50-free and the 4x100-medley. Quite an Olympics indeed.

I think the players probably are sports fans. They are certainly not all one sports fan, though, so I'll grant you that.

Last week our PE teacher showed us enduring clips from past Olympics. You're right, no additional garnishing is required to make your heart seize at Jesse Owens' victory at the Nazi Olympics, or Kerri Strug doing the vault on an injured ankle and landing on one leg. We were all openmouthed.

Basically the only time I ever watch sports is during the Olympics, mostly because they actually having sports I understand (my father thinks it's strange that I don't get baseball or basketball but I go nuts over dressage, luge, or synchro diving). I think I like it more for the aesthetic value, though, not for the personal stories - I'm not immune to stories like Bolt's and Torres's, but Michael Phelps kinda annoys me and I'm sick of hearing about Misty May.

Heh. I don't even know who Misty May is, off the top of my head. The nice thing is that I follow little enough so that I can't get annoyed with anyone!
