Counting Up, Counting On

When very young kids first learn to add, they do something called "counting up." To add 7 + 2, the child will count: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, [pause], eight, nine and will declare the answer to be 9. One hopes.

Sigh.

btw, there was an article in Science magazine the other week about a search for more Math Education PhDs (or Math PhDs with an interest in education) in order to teach future high school math teachers in universities. Maybe that would be a possibility for you?

I'm aware of the need, but I suffer from the lack of a PhD, and the lack of a desire to pursue one! I could imagine going off to get a Math Ed. PhD, but that would be quite a lot of years that I'm not super-psyched about investing at the moment.

Although I would guess that a lot of Ed.D./Ph.D.s in education are designed around the needs of working adults (either online or evenings/weekends), so it may be more feasible (someday later if you are feeling more positive about academe) than most PhDs.

Most of them seem to be fairly intensive: they're still Ed.D.'s and Ph.D.'s. Certainly at the "good" places they require full time enrollment. (As a math person, I suspect that I'd be able to get in to such a good place.)
