Wal-Mart

On my way up to teach at UChicago's Splash, I was asked to stop in at a Wal-Mart to pick up some tape. After asking if there was anything else, I was asked to pick up some origami paper. Interesting. I started running into that kind of thing when I came to University. I was never considered rich by comparison to those around me, but we never wanted for basics. And I never saw racism around me because there were too many whites. When I found out about it, I got curious, too. It led me in a completely different path through University; some of my focus and activities changed; I took classes that I wouldn't've considered before and, for that matter, it's why I'm here, on the Rez, going to school this year in a place where I am the racial minority. It's different, and it's good. I want to understand, and I want change. Separate is inherently unequal, and all that jazz? Seeing the way these people grow up and the way my older friends grew up, let alone friends from, say, Mathcamp, shows quite a difference ( ... )
