In my experience, gmail has better uptime than MIT's mail system, which is the main reason that I give out my gmail address these days (rather than my MIT account which forwards to gmail).

In gmail, you can go to settings->Accounts and Import
I assume that will allow you to import your MIT mail, but others may know better.

I also was going to say that there has only been one occasion when I've experienced gmail downtime in the entire time that it has existed. Maybe it's just due to being in a different time zone from everyone else when the big problems have occurred. I was going to say that I didn't think there had ever been an outage that lasted for more than a couple hours, but I guess that link you have suggests otherwise.

Also, I don't know whether you have any official affiliation with MIT these days, but if not, it might be confusing to give people an MIT address to contact you.

I generally give my alum.mit.edu address, which forwards. I feel like that's reasonably honest. :)
