I have started reading the book Teaching as Leadership from Steven Farr at Teach for America, and it is deeply insightful. Based on the study of their many teachers over the decades, they have identified what they believe to be the six major factors that the really outstanding teachers share. Sounds very interesting. I hope that numbers 4 and 5 are spelled out in a bit more detail at some point, since they seem potentially quite vacuous.

Each one has a chapter, so I certainly expect it!

How long have the profiled teachers been teaching?

They state explicitly that their focus is on new teachers (1-2 years), and as far as I can tell (so far) they don't do anything to talk about teachers who've been at it longer. In particular, I can't find any follow-up with the teachers they profile after their first couple of years. This is one place I think the book is really lacking.
