I am sad… but I must move on.

May 31, 2007 02:55

I honestly never thought that I would see the day that I would post a “last post” entry here at LiveJournal. When I joined LJ in 2003, I thought that it was a wonderful service, run by wonderful people who believed in two values that I hold dear: freedom, and open source. While LiveJournal still provides Open Source software, in recent days they ( Read more... )

;-(

I do understand why you're doing this. I have pondered leaving LJ several times since I first logged on in 2001, but for some reason I kept coming back like a magnet. Please be careful out there, and may all your dreams in life come true!

Hugs & Love,

You do know LiveJournal has admitted they messed up, posted a public apology, and started correcting their error, right?

Except that they are more-or-less saying that the error was partially the fault of the users who made the admins think they were bad people... I commented on it this morning, but while they were saying they were sorry left and right, and claiming zero tolerance, they also said “in an unfortunate number of cases these journals were suspended for easily correctable problems in their profiles that would then allow them to be reinstated” and “in some cases Journals that were restored will be asked to clarify their profiles to avoid the appearance that they are soliciting or encouraging illegal activities”. Sounds like blanket censorship to me (“Hey, don’t do this and we kick you again; sorry.”), and that is not freedom of speech.

Not to mention, if something like this were to happen again, what would the next target be? When? Why? Who will be the one to put the axe to my data? Those are too many things that I just cannot justify leaving myself open to in the future. When I joined LiveJournal, and even up until the other day, I ( ... )

I will be sad to see you go.
You did know that not too long after you posted this there was a a public apology from the CEO posted, including details on how those communities will be reinstated?

Yeah. I caught it this morning... I wrote some about it here (in a comment that I just left before this one), but I also wrote about it on my other place as well, right after reading about it.

It was too little, too late, and even still puts partial blame onto the users whose accounts were deleted without cause. :-/

Fortunately, it will be possible for me to stay in contact with everyone without relying on LJ as my primary site and trusting them with all of my data.

Hi there - tried to make the feed but got this message - Syndication

There was an error retrieving this URL. The server may be down or the content unavailable at this time. Please verify the URL you have provided and try again.

Is it all up and working?

It is running, but because of the newness of the domain being moved over and all of that, the dust might not have settled in the DNS system yet. Everything should be up and the rest of the ’net should catch up in another day or two-silly domain changes take time, and I forgot that I get those changes unusually quickly.

So, it should be completely accessible globally within the next 24-48 hours. Thank you for trying, and if you could try again in a day or so, that would be absolutely amazing! Thanks!

I’m not sure what exactly is up with LiveJournal lately. They seem to be having issues connecting to outside resources; they cannot seem to add Erica’s feed either-but Google Reader got it just fine.

You shall be missed, Mike. Indeed, I met you on LiveJournal, and I don't think we would've met otherwise. We've had our ups and downs, but it's been a pleasure reading up on your thoughts, even though they've often been beyond my comprehension, and I have seldom commented. You're a very vocal person, and that's an admirable trait; don't lose it. I also respect your reasons for leaving, and will try to keep up with your new blogs. But, yes, it's certainly been a pleasure. Good luck to you too. :)

Quite true, and thank you. Of course, I am still in the process of moving; I have a few kinks to iron out in getting the new setup completed, plus there is some time necessary for the “dust to clear” so to speak, before I’m completely over there.

The feed should be added within a day or two, just as soon as it is accessible to LiveJournal, and there are still some issues in the LJ software regarding support for the “consumer” side of OpenID (e.g., the thing that lets me login as a user from another blog to comment and the like). Hopefully, Brad Fitzpatrick will be getting that stuff fixed soon and that will make things a little easier. But, the server part is just fine; so everyone here at LJ can go now to my blog and comment on my entries should they choose to do so. :-)

I hope that all is well for you!
