I'm partial to the premise, and far future is awesome fun. I liked their mentions of "history" and things that people just aren't sure about (Hector's birde har har). And "sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" is such a funny meta dig at the technologically advanced future of magic worlds.
I was a little disengaged by points that seemed at ends with what I might have expected realistically. For example, Arvid sounds more like an old school literature professor and/or high school teacher. I'm accustomed to a "see it from both sides, of course the kings are bragging, don't romanticize the past, they're people too" attitude from history professors. Granted, Arvid is noted to be unusual in this regard, but he did choose to enter the academic culture where he'd be surrounded by this pessimism, when he could be bouncing off the walls in front of teenagers instead. Another bit of attitude clash was when Lynne described Sacae as a place that "hasn't really left prehistoric times," ( ... )
