Oh! I forgot about the YK/EK factor. I should have known and adjusted accordingly. I'm going to guess Bone. I'd like to guess Feltus Ovalton, since my friend wrote it, but it doesn't seem to be widely known.

my son loved that book when he was younger.
i think it helped that i would do the voices when i read it.

still have it here. can't bear to part with it.

Oh yes, we love this book. My mom got it for my son a couple years ago and he immediately wanted to hear it over and over (and over). It's really quite something - scary but in just the right way, redeeming, heroic, elemental, fun, tricky. I love it.
