"Lol."

More phonetically "lawl."

LOL, to my knowledge stands for laughing out loud so I can't fucking fathom why people say "lol." There's a whole row of people at work who say this. I hear it constantly. =\ eh. I'm torn about that. It's different.

After deliberation, I've decided that it's different because you say *sigh* to make a differentiated point from actually sighing. When a person says "lol" they are making no different point from actually laughing. They mean "that's funny."

If it's funny why don't they just LAUGH?

it's absolutely FUBAR and SNAFU to say LOL out loud. Acronyms like LOL should be left far away, perhaps underwater where they need SCUBA gear. We could shoot people who say it with LASERs, or just detect them with RADAR, but they'd still use their MODEMs and say it on youtube. People like this are usually WYSIWYG--that is they often work for NASA or some other nerdy profession--like yours. The really annoying thing about it has to be that it's an inherent lie. Why would you say LOL when you could actually laugh out loud? Is it really too far away for them to be saying ROFL out loud?
