Now go and read the Salmon of Doubt. It's a collection of unfinsihed works and anecdotes found in his offices after he died. It makes excellent bathroom reading!
I had the luck to hear Mr. Adams speak once, about a year before his death and some time after book 5. He said that every time he wrote a Hitchhiker book, he expected it to be the last, so when he went back to write another, he had a hard time getting the characters back together again. So in book 5, he just killed them all off, because that way he'd "know where they all are."
