Okay. So the workout routine I do now is the one I got from a fitness instructor, whom I PAID to tell me what to do. I like working out alone, I never really need a spot and I'm still increasing in weight across the board

Well, since it doesn't seem like you ever officially became "partners" permanently, I'd simply tell him that your trainer told you to continue on this regimen, and if he doesn't want to do that, he can go do whatever he wants to by himself. He can do what he wants, but you're doing this.
Polite, but firm is usually the best strategy.
That is, unless you want to deviate from what your trainer told you to do. Then, go ahead and do what he wants.
"Thanks for the advice. But I paid the trainer to give me this workout plan, and I want to give it a fair shot to get my money's worth. And you definitely don't have to do the same workouts I'm doing. Let's figure out a way to arrange our routines so you can do different things and I can keep doing what I'm doing."
Of course, if you'd really rather not continue being his workout buddy, then say, "Thanks for the advice, but I paid for this routine, so I'm going to stick with it for now. We both should find workout buddies who are more compatible with our routines. Maybe some other time, we can work together. See you around the gym."
