Actually, the stomach maintains a layer of mucus around it's inner lining to prevent such a thing!

... But, uh, I'm thinking that's probably not all that comforting in the given circumstances.

..But it really hurts, and its making really horrible noises. Are you sure it wont eat itself?

100% sure. That noise (and the hurting) happens because the muscles around your stomach are contracting, trying to squish food that isn't there. Normally, that movement helps digestion, but when there's nothing to digest... well, it just causes us trouble. But it can't digest itself, no matter how empty it is. The body's tricky like that.

My stomach's been making alot of that noise lately too. All of our stomachs, unfortunately.
