“He did not know how wide a country, arid and precipitous, must be crossed before the traveller through life comes to an acceptance of reality. It is an illusion that youth is happy, an illusion of those who have lost it; but the young know they are wretched, for they are full of the truthless ideals which have been instilled into them, and each ( Read more... )

That book is on my to-read list.

I feel like that most of the time. It's just been worse with the book -- Philip conspires with my own constantly lurking people-anxiety to put me in a state of painful awkwardness all of the time. Dangerous!

It's a wonderful book. I'm not done with it yet, but I think you'll like it.

that's the problem with books some time (if there can be a problem with books) sometimes you identify too much with a heroine/hero and feel stuck in their rut as well. That happens to me, at least.

:) I love that book. I should reread it soon-- it's been too long.

Hi there. Don't really know a better place to tell you this; you can delete it after reading if you want, I guess :)

Your Tori Amos userpic for which you say "artist unknown" is by Jill Thompson. It was originally in the Boys for Pele tourbook; you can see the full work, and click for a nice big scan, here.

Thompson drew the Sandman story arc "Brief Lives" as well as the cute pseudo-manga "Death #1," which is a reworking of the Season of Mists arc. She also did DC Vertigo's monthly of Black Orchid, which ran for a couple of years in the late '90s. And finally, she has a comic that she both writes and draws, Scary Godmother.

OK, I'll hop off the women-artists-in-comics visibility soapbox now ;)

I've been spending a lot of time in airports recently, what with going to see Mum and househunting in Alberta. My experience was a nice contrast to painful self-awareness ( ... )
