"'The world is certainly a small place,' she said.

'What makes you say that?'

'I mean sudden,' Frankie said. 'The world is certainly a sudden place.'"

Carson McCullers is one of those rare writers who can still surprise, even when you know what is coming. Exactly that feeling in this tiny excerpt. Sharp inhalation of reader's breath.

I love that quote. I'm sure it has even more meaning when you read the novel....which is why I've added it to my never-ending to-read list.

Drop everything and move Carson to the top of your list immediately!! I predict that you will love her. I can never decide which I like more, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter or The Member of the Wedding, but you should find and read either (but not both -- better not to read them back to back, which is what I did and which caused me to undervalue The Member of the Wedding egregiously at first) at once.

that I will do. I will be at the used book store later this week/next week/sometime before I die and will keep my eye out for either one. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is already on my list, but for some reason I want to read this one first instead.

also, did you get my outrageously long text asking for your e-mail? Actually it wasn't that long at all, but I never use my text messaging so if it's about 2 syllables it's outrageously long in my mind. Other that phone/LJ I didn't know how to ask you for it, and I wans't near a computer at the time.

And there ends my saga.
