I've often thought that people who grow up in broken families are worse off in relationships; they always seem to be waiting for the crisis, watching the door, holding their breath. There is no light, nor dark. Just multiple shades of gray. And we walk through life searching for the light and running from the dark. But once we realize that neither exists we can learn to accept. Then be happy. As for the faces in the mirrors of life, none which is broken. More like that each mirror is a prism. Each reflection is a different aspect. And each aspect is as important as the rest.
