[Background] Once, Kohane had a happy family, with her father and mother, who told her that as long as they wished hard enough, they would stay happy forever. Unfortunately, this didn't come true. When Kohane was young, she saw the spirit of a woman beside her father, revealing that he was having an affair with that woman. Upon realizing this, her mother and father constantly argued until one day they split up. Determined to upstage him, her mother used Kohane's abilities as a spirit medium to gain fame. As time passed on, her obsession swallowed her up. She refused to touch Kohane, or let Kohane touch anything impure, go to school, interact with others, etc., to the point where she saw only the spirit medium in Kohane. Kohane's life consisted mostly of performing exorcisms or going on TV broadcasts about spirit mediums.
This changed when she met Kimihiro Watanuki, another person who could see spirits. The two became fast friends, as he was the first person in a long time to treat her with any affection. Unfortunately, Kohane's fame was rising--in a bad way. Because her abilities were more powerful than other spirit mediums and thus she could see what they couldn't, she was accused of being a fraud. As a result, her house was vandalized, she received threats through the phone, and she was at one point pushed down the stairs. Once, when she was asked to locate a woman but couldn't, the woman's mother began beating her and no one intervened.
As time passed on, though, and as Kohane and Watanuki's friendship developed, she began gaining the strength to stand up to her mother.
--Except Somarium got in the way.
[Personality] Kohane is quiet, wise, and very passive. She's definitely capable of showing emotion, though, given the right push. Otherwise, through all the threats, neglect, attacks, and accusations, she almost always holds her composure extremely well despite her young age. This is a contrast from her easily-upset mother, whom Kohane cares for more than anything. All Kohane wants is for her mother to be happy, and hopes that her powers will somehow help and that her mother will notice the hole she's dug herself into. At the same time though, she realizes that her mother is being consumed by her feelings, and that things can't continue as they did before. Kohane even blames herself for the way her mother is, whether it be for having powers in the first place or for not being the spirit medium her mother wanted.
Overall, she's a sweet girl who doesn't like to trouble others. As long as people she cares for are all right, her own well-being doesn't matter. However, she is bluntly honest. Because of this, she can appear cold at times, as she will tell the truth even if it's harmful to others.
While she doesn't often show it, Kohane is also quite lonely. After all, no one treated her like a person for several years until she met Watanuki. Therefore, she isn't used to affection, but quickly grows attached to people who care for her.
[Specialties/Abilities] As stated, Kohane is a spirit medium/exorcist (of her world, anyway). Therefore, she can sense the presence of spirits and people in general. She's also a partial telepath/empath, as she can sense feelings, powers, recent memories, and the like, but only to a certain extent. For example, she can see that Watanuki made a pinky-promise with someone, but she can't tell who. She also notices right away that Watanuki can see spirits like her but that he's different from her somehow (which she later pinpoints to him not being alone whereas she was). Additionally, she knows that Watanuki and his friend Doumeki (whose pure aura she can sense) are sharing an eye and are "blending" together, and could tell that one of the spirits she exorcised once met Watanuki. However, she can't read exact thoughts, so don't worry about that. Again, most of these powers came from the magical object inside of her.
The best way to describe her powers is that most of what she can sense have a supernatural affinity (though keep in mind that in xxxHolic, quite a few things do, such as strong emotions/habits). Also, the true extent of her powers are never explained, hence my vagueness.
[Affection] Kohane isn't used to being hugged or touched affectionately, to say the least. That doesn't mean she doesn't like it though, so feel free to hug her or whatever. Just keep in mind she's only eleven.
[Fighting] Injures I don't mind. However, she isn't a fighter, so don't expect her to fight back. Killing isn't allowed without permission.
[Other Facts] Her surname, Tsuyuri, is written like "May 7th." Her first name means "little feather."
