Malloy!

I have been in Amber for a couple of weeks. Setting up the offices and clearing out the detritus of the previous Ambassador (including the previous Ambassador, himself) is taking more work than I had originally anticipated. Mr. Endicott has proven invaluable in these endeavours. I have several meetings scheduled with my counterparts from other lands. Am interested to test whether theories of Foreign Inferiority hold water. I predict mixed results.

Sailed here on The Optimist with one of those young Dare lads. He was prancing about the deck with some brazen doxy on his arm. She must have been well-paid, though, since she had the temerity to appear offended when I addressed her as such. The effrontery! As if she could possibly be anyone of importance.

By now, you have no doubt discovered the hidden compartments in my parting gift to you. If not, TRY HARDER!

Your nephew, Carruthers, is a staggering disappointment and will no doubt bring the entire Ministry down about my ears. I have named him my First Clerk so that his thinly-veiled spy-reports back to you may be more accurate.

Thank you for the lovely fruit basket.

Progress!
