So, my uni workload is finally easing up again (until June and the end-of-term Hell Week, anyway). It is Very Nice Indeed to be able to think about doing something other than OMG ASSIGNMENTS again. I still have one outstanding, for gender studies, but omg our teacher for that is so awesome. She was all 'yeah, it's due on Thursday, but you can hand ( Read more... )

I choose "nay" and hope it was what I meant - I just realised that your poll question isn't totally clear.
But TBH, I wouldn't use it. No matter the reasons the artist is MIA - and it could well be temporarily due to whatever kind of circumstances - this doesn't make the work public domain.
If I were in the situation of the artist, I wouldn't be happy if someone used it without my consent.

Also, as I understand it, loving a fanart means showing respect towards it, and reusing without consent wouldn't do that. You also would be setting an example that might influence others, less considerate about crediting and asking for permission...
What you could do is addning a comment to your work stating that you would have loved to use the art, but couldn't get permisson, but link the watchers to the art so they can see for themselves.

Otherwise, three yays to the Margolyes video! :o)

I would not use it - personally, I've always allowed anybody to use my fanarts, but I know for sure that some of my friends don't like that, and prefer to give authorizations. If she left fandom or doesn't reply you, I would give up that fanart.

Got to love a professor who doesn't think meeting deadlines is character-building.
Ahahaha. I've never met such a professor, but the idea sure does sound nice!

That Miriam Margolyes Internet fame story is fantastic! Oh Stephen Fry, your tweeting makes me happy. ♥ I can't imagine how surreal it is to see one's own (even non-original) video giffed on tumblr. Far out.

As for the fandom ettiquete bit, I really have no idea, alas.
