My favorite pickles are those huge ones that I grew up calling Kosher pickles, so sour and crispycrunchy. The more 'pickled' (sour) the better, since that's the way my dad made them in that crock in the garage.
I love imagining the hobbits teaching the cooks in Rivendell (or Minas Tirith) how to make pickles.

I love sweet gherkins, but my favorite sweet pickles I make myself: lime pickles. These are NOT made with limes, but are called that because you soak the cucumbers in lime water overnight, before draining and rinsing them. It makes them taste incredibly light and crisp! They are so good, and I only have one partial jar of my last batch left!
I don't buy relish, but when I need to use some in tuna or chicken salad, I simply mince up some sweet pickles!
My favorite way to eat them (something that will now be a rare treat, *sigh*) is with slices of cheddar cheese and Ritz crackers, accompanied by a Diet Coke.
