Sticky subject (and I'm not trying to start any drama!)...How are you guys handling discipline at this point?  Are you even attempting to discipline at all?  I'm torn...Sam is REALLY starting to throw tantrums.  Normally, I kind of laugh and walk away so that she knows that tantrums don't have any affect, but now she is throwing things and kicking ( Read more... )

my 15 mos old isn't a mega tantrum thrower, so i can't really say what we do cause usually when he starts getting a little too out-there it's because he needs a nap, but i would recommend the book The Happiest Toddler on the Block. it is very insightful about the mindset of a toddler and how to squelch the meltdowns almost before they begin.

We put Robert in the crib for a minute or two if he's going psycho at home... partly for him to calm down, partly for me =) It hasn't effected bedtime that I can see.

When he's going totally crazy, I'll either try and take him out of the situation (usually it's only at home, so we'll go for a ride or go run around in the back yard) or I'll put him to bed (meaning nap or bedtime a little earlier because he's obviously tired). But he's still a kicker/biter (me only) and we're trying the separation thing to try and break him of the habbit.

I will admit that he does get his hand swatted for one thing - pulling glasses off faces. He just thinks that's the most hilarious thing and we don't have the money to be replacing glasses all the time. I'm not a big spanker at all, but that's one thing I will hold my ground on.

At this age strong emotions can be really scary to a child, so if Gage is throwing a massive screaming tantrum I try to hold and soothe him and help him to calm down. I'm not sure a 15mo can understand discipline.

So far we haven't had much of a problem. Oliver is too much of a lover and hates us being "mad" at him..
But he's had a coupl;e hand smacks for throwing stuff off the table (and I mean throwing! nearly broke a cabinet, little demon) and touching the heater.
When he starts throwing a paddy, I just say strenly, Oliver, Stop it Now and he does. *shrug* I guess we're lucky
he's learning how to scream when he's frustrated, but we ignore that totally.

I wish I knew. Blue screams and freaks out sometimes. I keep trying to read The Discipline Book (Dr. Sears) but I just haven't been able to get past the first few pages; there's always too much I need to do. *sigh* Let us know when you find the magic solution! ;-)
