Baby Butts

Is anyone thinking of cloth diapering their kid when s/he arrives? I understand the pro's and con's at this point, but now I'm on to the acquisition questions.

If you are, or thinking about it...
  • Do you sew, know friends who sew, to have homemade ones? What about knit wool soakers?
  • Where are you thinking of purchasing them?
  • What kind do you think ( Read more... )

I haven't mentioned it to my parents... I don't think it'll be a problem. I think after dropping the homeschooling bomb this will barely register. ;) My MIL cloth diapered back in the day so I know she'll be knowledgeable and supportive. :)

Thanks for the info, by the way. I'm not an experienced sewer either, but I'm willing to give it a shot! :)

Yeah, I think she'll come around once she sees the advances in CD'ing. ;)

With homeschooling it was a huge blowout. My mom freaked out crying, saying I was destroying my sons' lives. It's still a sore subject with her but I've learned that she had her turn and now it's mine.

I figure, like your mom will see with CD'ing, my mom will only be convinced by results. It may take years to actually get her to see it from my perspective.

Anywho... I'm excited I'm not the only one thinking of CD'ing as well!

Kellys Closet is a great website with a lot of cloth diapers and info.

I've been thinking about buying the Kissaluvs diapers.

I did cloth with my son, and will exclusively cloth this bum. With my son, I was SURE i would birth a big baby who grew like a week, so i started out buying smalls. he didn't fit into them until he was 2 months old. every time i bought a pack of disposables, i was so sad! so this baby has a good newborn stash (mostly purchased from clothdiapering), in the hopes that means it won't get much use.

to get my head around all the different kinds last time, I bought a starter pack which had some of each kind. I strongly recommend not just choosing one type before birth, because each baby's shape makes some work better than others. I use prefolds, fitteds, pockets, and all in ones. for covers when needed, i use PUL, fleece, or knit covers (I do knit). There is something about each kind I like! :) Anyway, good luck. It's a little overwhelming at first, but then it just becomes fun! :D

I think I remember seeing a starter pack on a website! I might poke around for some free sewing patterns though...

Thanks! I was agonizing on which one to pick. I think I might go for a variety.

I cloth diaper. I use Fuzzi Bunz, which are a pocket style diaper. I'll be switching to bumGenius! for this baby because they're an one-size diaper.

if you're interested, there is an lj coop going on right now for prefolds! i think it closes soon, so now is a good time to get in.

i'm planning to use infant prefolds until the baby outgrows them, then probably use both prefolds and fitted diapers afterwards.

(my mom used cloth diapers when i was a kid, so she's totally for it now. she was really interested when i told her about things like snappis and fitted diapers, since 25 years ago it was apparently flats, prefolds, and hard-to-use pins!)

oh, also, if you join clothdiapering i can link you to a post i made recently (it's a closed community). i asked about knit soaker patterns and got a ton of links and advice.

i'm trying really hard not to buy too much stuff from that community until later, because i heard that the elastic can erode on fitted diapers and i don't want them to be useless by the time the kitten's born. i have started slowly aquiring a stash, though, because cloth diapers are just too cute to pass up!

I already applied~! I'll let you know when I'm accepted. I edited the post to include a soaker pattern from punk_knitters.

Thank you so much for all the information!

i think the punk_knitters one is the best free recommendation from clothdiapering :)

i also have a link to an lj entry with a sewn diaper pattern in my memories, if you're into diy stuff. i'm still not sure if i'm going to try to make my own or go the easy way and buy them premade.
