february24 It had been two hours since Joel and his family had buried Sarah next to their grandma at the local cemetery. Sarah had been driving the car, Joel slept comfortably with his head on her shoulder, when the impact happened. It was on the drive home from their monthly concert, a tradition they had shared since Sarah was 16 - now Sarah was dead and Joel had to live on, knowing he’d never see her again or hear her contagious laughter.
Benji had been by Joel’s side constantly the last 24 hours, since he was discharged from the hospital. He had held him through the night, from the screaming nightmares to the ball of tears; Benji had been there through it all. Benji was grieving too, of course. Sarah was, as well as Joel’s baby sister, also his. But Joel and Sarah had been oddly close since Sarah was born. Joel was a human magnet and everyone he came across stuck to him and never let go. He was a warm hearted human, someone you couldn’t other than love.
“Thank you..” Joel softly spoke against the side of Benji’s neck, once they had gotten home from the funeral. Joel didn’t wish to attend the gathering afterwards, he wanted to be alone, and not having to deal with family members and their pity words. Benji shivered, the warm breath ran down his spine, so he automatically brought his arm around Joel, to bring him closer.
“I appreciate everything you’ve done for me, Benji. I feel so heart broken, but yet so loved” Benji smiled softly as he listened to Joel speak, Joel was loved, Benji loved him more than anyone else in this world, but losing a sister of course took it’s toll on everyone and it was hard to deal with.
“I do love you, Joel, very much.” Benji closed his eyes when feeling Joel wrap his arms around him. The loss of Sarah was going to take a long time to move on from, and she would always have a wounded spot in his heart, but he knew, together they would make it, move on and continue living.
“I love you” Joel nuzzled his nose against Benji’s earlobe before standing up. His eyes were puffed, swollen and red, but yet, somehow he looked so peaceful and content.
“I’m going to go lie down a bit” Joel spoke softly before walking up the stairs to his bedroom. He had been living in the house for almost three years; Sarah had her own room and used to spend almost every night over. It was going to take a long time before Joel would get used to sleeping alone.
Benji stood up as well, and joined his twin in his room - “you mind?” Benji asked, but he didn’t wait for a respond before he slipped under the covers as well. He hadn’t slept for almost a week and his body felt heavy. Closing his eyes, he felt Joel’s head on his shoulder and arm wrap around his middle.
They hadn’t spent this much time, this close together since they were kids when Joel was scared of the thunderstorms. Benji didn’t mind, not one bit, but his mind couldn’t stop but wonder and over analyze Joel’s every move - and he certainly couldn’t answer why his heart would beat in the same rhythm as Joel’s and why he had never felt as comfortable as he felt at this very minute.
“…Joel” Benji whispered, Joel nodded slightly, causing Benji to open his eyes and look down at his twin. Joel’s eyes were shut and he had a very pleased look one his face. Feeling Joel’s fingers swirl across Benji’s abdomen, Benji moaned softly. Benji hadn’t been seeing anyone for over six months and needless to say, he was in heaven being so close to another human being.
“Mmm” Joel continued, since Benji hadn’t finished what he had started - Benji shrugged lightly as his fingers swooped under the covers to trace up and down Joel’s arm. Joel’s fingers continued stroking across Benji’s chest, feeling it rise and fall in motion with his heart beat.
“Joel…” Benji started again “…I really want” He didn’t need to end his sentence, because Joel felt the same, wanted the same and knew exactly what words ran through Benji’s mind over and over, because he had had the same thoughts too - he just didn’t want to act on it, since he didn’t want to lose another sibling.
Feeling Joel’s lips against his own, Benji gasped softly, but relaxed into it and let his lips move with Joel’s. Keeping his eyes closed, Benji rolled over onto his side, facing Joel, never breaking the kiss. Joel’s hand glided onto Benji’s back as Benji pulled Joel closer. Twirling their legs together, Benji moaned softly when feeling Joel’s tongue roam across Benji’s lower lip- Benji wanted this, he needed it, he exhaled for it, but something inside him didn’t feel right, something about this whole situation didn’t feel right. Pulling back, Benji caught his breath before looking at Joel. Joel was smiling, his slim lips were puffed and his cheeks had turned slightly inflamed from the passion that was obviously going on between them.
“Maybe we shouldn’t” Benji somewhat regretted the words even before they flew out his mouth, but he needed to be sure that Joel knew what was going to happen, he needed to be sure Joel was going to be able to look him in the eye afterwards. There was simply no way in hell anything was going to come between them. Joel’s facial features didn’t change, he still had a content smile on his face, but it was obvious he was going over every single word that came out of Benji’s mouth, before answering.
“You’re not taking advantages of me, Benji, not even close.” Joel began, his hand was resting on Benji’s back and he slowly felt Benji relax into it.
“It’s going to take a long time to move on, from losing Sarah, I am going to need you by my side, if you want it to be on a mattress on the floor or by lying next to me in my bed will be your move, but believe me when I say, this had happened even if Sarah hadn’t passed away. I’ve been crushing on you for years, Sarah just made me promise to do something about it before it was too late... and now” Joel’s eyes filled up with water, it was hard for him to pour his heart out, but he felt it was necessary right now.
“.. and now” he continued “after losing Sarah, I realized we might not have forever, together, so of course I was going to make a move and have you kiss me, the butterflies are so alive Benji, it tickles and I’m smiling, look at me, I’m smiling - this, us, is making me smile, so how can it be wrong?” Joel questioned before drying his eyes with the pillow. Benji hadn’t been able to take his eyes off of Joel the entire time he spoke, he felt about 1 million pounds lighter, and hearing Joel speak about the past and future and not having to waste unnecessary time, Benji simply leaned in and kissed Joel’s puffed lips all over again.
Everything was going to be alright.
