Japan's record sales are just not what they were back in 1997. I don't think "Blue Daisy" had a very good tie-in, and that's really what makes the single sell. "Ash Like Snow" had a Gundam tie-in so that's why it sold so much more.
Also I don't feel like Ryo leaving has affected the band that much. Musically he didn't seem to add very much to the group as Shunsaku composed the majority of the songs and Tommy writes all the lyrics.
Of course sales concerning music in Japan before and after the 2000 years have nothing in common, but don't tell me that a CD sale with 4000 copies is good nowadays
( ... )
I feel like there has a lot more to do with why they got the rankings they got then just "OH NOES, RYO LEFT" lol. It also has a lot to do with what else was released that week. Also I think the tie-in's they are going to get in the future are not going to be very good, which won't help sales. I think they had a better chance before under Sony, I can't think of any top selling Warner artists (BONNIE PINK is the only other Warner artist that even comes to mind). It's sales aren't good, but it's not really terrible. Normal sales I would say. Back when they returned from their first hiatus their sales had taken a drop, to what during that time was average.
I also don't see what a cover song and foreigners in the music video having to do with anything. I think your thinking too much into it. Tommy has always featured foreigners in her solo videos, and a lot of other Japanese artists do as well.
They have recently stated that they do not care about chart positons and just want to make music. I don't either, as the Japanese chart is full of rubbish and TV/commercial themes. As long as they keep their dedicated fan base, then them and me are happy. What is inside the CD cover does't matter, it's the music on the CD that matters. The 3 songs are all very strong, enjoyable and great to listen too. I have only heard 1 person complain about the cover version, and he has his own warped reasons for doing that.
