Feminism Just Means We Want Equality

I consider myself a feminist. I also consider myself a comic fan. I enjoy reading them, but also understand that for the Big Two (Marvel and DC comics), I'm not the primary audience. There have been a few token attempts to woo female readers (Spider-Man Loves Mary-Jane, Spider-Girl and DC's MINX line) and there are honestly great books that appeal ( Read more... )

The Girl Wonder quote is Spot On! Somehow women are supposed to put up with female characters being overly sexualized, but would men do the same? And I think that as a woman going into a store, I'd react pretty similar if the store featured half-naked men statues as half-naked women statues but there are men out there who seek out the half-naked women statues, but would be offended by half-naked men statues. Funny, isn't it? Well, not ha-ha funny, more like ironic double standard funny.

Umm ... men are half-naked quite frequently. Have you actually met a man who was offended by half-naked men? Or a statue of a naked or half-naked man? Anyone protesting the David? Anyone freaking out about a Namor figurine? Or Hawkman? As a gay man, I can tell you that topless guys in shorts aren't particularly uncommon nor is porn with men as the subject. And half-naked guys are seen in ads all the time. A&F uses them in their print ads and their instore ads. Haven't seen a protest yet.

half-naked men in superhero comics? Yeah, rarely and if you do, it's inside, not on the cover. Except maybe for Wolverine's Weapon X series, and even then I think the naked pics of him were reserved to the inside.

I looked at my toy shelves-men coverd from head to toe, many also with faces/heads covered. Statue case - same thing. We have a Robin statue where he's got shorts on.

Maybe if you shop at a store with a lot of wrestling fans - otherwise nope, not a lot of half naked men around.

First, I think we should note that the post I was responding to was talking about manikins, so it was not limiting itself to comic covers ( ... )

When there's no choice for fans of female characters (be they whatever they are) but between porn and the kids table it's a problem. Having only Cheesecake as an option for female characters is as good as saying explicitly What Else Are They There For.

I don't mind a few of those Girl Wonder quote link images, they have decent spines, their poses aren't insulting or degrading and I have seen a few fan pics around quite like that but they are dressed like that for a specific purpose it's not their default setting. Fully dressed males are mainstream but fully dressed females are found in fan redesign memes.

It's sad that the only book I'm hanging on getting the next copy of is about gender non-specific mice isn't it.

I looked at the covers of the comics at my shop and while I saw some cheesecake, most of it was not cheesecake. The statuette shelves had some things that could be called cheesecake, but most of it was not. The only topless person was Aquaman.
