The reason some of the writers I know label their stories pre-slash is because in their minds it is a precursor to the boys finally taking the next step towards making their relationship a sexual one. Kind of foreplay. A gen writer would never label their stories that because their minds are not going there, so the writers must be slashers.

Hmmm. Well, that makes some sort of sense I suppose, but I still find it strange to label a fic based upon what *will* happen at some future time and not what is actually included in the story. I mean, in we think that way, then we are all "pre-dead" which I find rather depressing. :P

More and more, it sseems to me that people are being conditioned to think mere 'friendship/bromance/sisterhood (that one really doesn't meld well)' is just 'another way to pick on the minority label (primarily homosexual, for obvious reasons) of your choosing.' As such, there must be at least a hint of sex/romance, because if the story is actually gen, we're saying there's something wrong with homosexuals. Which, you know, is by-and-large complete B.S., but that's an attitude I see more and more of.

I'm in love with the USA shows 'White Collar' and 'Suits,' but finding genfic in either fandom (never mind well-written genfic) is like finding a purple elephant in the cat carrier -- possible, but don't hold your breath or buy perishable foods. I've almost given up on STXI -- I'll grant you the chemistry between Chris Pine, Karl Urban, and Zachary Quinto is electric, but still. Grr. It's frustrating sometimes.

I never thought about that possibility - perhaps I have not encountered that attitude much as I tend to read in more old school fandoms. Don't get me wrong about slash... I enjoy a good slash story - but what draws me is not necessarily the "porn" but the intimate relationship between the characters. I think "bromance" gen is most appealing to me because it provides the emotional and psychological intimacy without the sex, which can serve as a distraction in slash stories... the sexual aspects too often dominate and become the "reason" for the story - which is fine if that is what floats your boat - but I prefer to read for plot and character exploration. Besides, after reading slash stories for over 35 years, most of it gets a bit stale. There are only so many ways to write about slick, hot, pumping...well, never mind.... LOL!

Amen. You are my new hero. Do you plan on writing more STXI/TOS fic?

(p.s. Have you seen 'Suits' or 'White Collar?' If you like bromance, they'll definitely give you the warm fuzzies. ;-)

I will keep your recs in mind next time I am courting a new fandom. Presently, I have fallen into Merlin fandom, which is keeping me engaged at the moment. I tend to avoid more than one good fandom at a time because it makes it harder for me to really immerse myself in the reading and writing aspect of fanfiction.

Which sort of answers the second question. I would love to write more Trek, but I need to be in the right frame of mind. If the 2013 movie is good and draws me in, it is quite likely I will revisit both those fandoms - and who knows! I love to write, but my real life job is extremely exhausting, and gets more so every year and the amount of work required increased due to layoffs and cutbacks and "reforms". Thus, my creative juices are generally drained by the time I have any time to myself. *sigh* I miss the days I could sit down and write a good three hours straight. I just don't have that kind of time any more.

Thanks for stopping by!
