Okay, listen, I have to stop here because I need to go to bed-BUT OH, MY GOODNESS. THIS IS RIDICULOUSLY GOOD.
I mean, fantastic plot and terrific TOS characterization aside-the writing is gorgeous and emotive! I seriously can see this happening between the characters, and their voices, expressions, and all the little things that make us love them so much. So many people pass up fics like this; plotty, character-centric tales that run like a real episode. I'm glad I found this.
I can't wait to finish this tomorrow, when it's not one a.m., haha. I'll leave another little note when I finish!!
PS, my heart broke during Spock's internal dialogues when he first found Kirk hurt!
Oh! I am so glad you are here and enjoying the read! Sorry to keep you up so late. LOL! And yes, I am a bit of a plot whore, which is why most of my fics take so long to complete. I can occasionally write something short, but the majority of my work is long and plotty. I am also happy to know Spock's internal dialogue works for you. He is probably the most difficult character for me to get a hnadle on, being as he is alien and extremely intelligent - of which I am neither! Hope you enjoy the rest of the story!
Ironically, I'm stopping right now for the exact same reason! I need sleep even though I want to continue.
I do want to say that the voice of your characters is clearly well thought out and brilliant. I am honestly enamored by how plot-centric and with a similar style as a traditional Star Trek episode! I am excited to see how the mind meld issue plays out, as well as how Kirk deals with the present situation. I do hope we end up on Vulcan too! I need more Planet Vulcan in fics since Star Trek XI literally killed it off...
And I win with it being 4 AM...though, reevaluating, I'm thinking that might be more of a failure on my part...
Yikes. Someone else I kept up to the wee hours. I have been occasionally accused of making people cry with my fics, but this is the first time I've been responsible for sleep deprivation! :P
I am pleased you find the characters’ voices work... I often hear them in my head when I am composing, and that seems to help. As to writing like an episode, I was actually going for that on some level. When I write for older shows, I do try to stick to the canon as shown on screen, and sometimes that means including things I do not necessarily agree with - like Kirk's attitude towards Twong. As much as I would like to think that in the future, a woman would be judged by the same standards as a man, that was not necessarily the case in TOS - so I tried to bring that in, while having McCoy and Spock point out the fallacy of this approach. (Hope it wasn't too heavy handed.... I personally find it patronizing when fic seems to be preaching at me- so I hope I didn't cross that line!)
