And now I will spend the next 30 days spamming your friends list with meme-y goodness.
A few things to say on the subject:
I love Power Rangers. Yes, a good part of it is because of the nostalgia factor. I grew up in the 90's, at the height of PR's popularity. No, it is not the highest quality television. I am aware of this. This show has been on for 17 seasons and has an archive of 700 episodes to date. It has been on a long time, and because it has been on a long time, it's a pretty mixed bag of good, bad, and ugly. Changes in source material, cast, production team, and TV stations have resulted in a wide range of things to either praise or criticize, and I can recognize what worked and what didn't. I realize that I outgrew the target demographic years ago, but I don't care. I still enjoy this show; I have all the episodes saved on my external, and when the new season premieres on Nickelodeon next year, I will watch that too, even though by the time it finishes airing I'll be a 22-year-old college graduate and way out of the demographic. I don't expect you to know what I'm talking about most of the time; you probably only remember the first couple seasons, and anything after was just stuff you caught as you flipped through the channels and quickly dismissed while thinking "That's still on?" So while I care a great deal about this, I don't expect you to know much about it. Though if you also care about this sort of thing, check out Linkara's "History of the Power Rangers" over at
thatguywiththeglasses.com. But whatever you're probably not reading any of this anyway.
On with the meme:
I grew up in the 90's. I was a little kid when Power Rangers was first on, and I was kind of a tomboy at that age, so I loved the whole fighting-monsters-humongous-mecha-stuff-blowing-up thing. I watched it regularly for the first couple seasons. And since I was a girl, I paid special attention to the female rangers.I did gymnastics when I was little, and I wanted to be Kimberly. I know I watched PR back when it was Kimberly and Trini, and I remember Aisha, too, so I saw at least the first couple seasons. I can vaguely remember when the movie came out, but I don't remember those stupid ninja costumes, and I definitely didn't remember Kat, so I guess I stopped around the beginning of season 3. But yeah, I loved Power Rangers when I was little. And then Kathleen Janosco told me they were lame, and I though we were BFFs (we weren't), so I stopped watching. Bitch.
Years later I started watching again. It was around the time Dino Thunder was rapping up, and Ninja Storm reruns were still playing regularly. Those were actually two of the better seasons, so I kept watching. This was also when Disney was playing some of the older episodes as "Power Rangers Generations" so I watched those too. Starting with SPD I started watching new PR regularly and I haven't stopped since (except Disney's awful re-cuts of the early Mighty Morphin' episodes). The fandom is highly addictive. Peer pressure can't stop me anymore.
