Because I'm an awesome sister whose always willing to help, I responded to these questions from Liz.
These questions are for Sex Roles:
1. How do you define a slut? In other words. how would you know one if you saw one? What would they be wearing, acting, what would their sexual activity consist of... etc.
A slut is someone with numerous sexual partners, often people they barely know and will never see again. Sluts vary in appearance and thus cannot necessarily be identified by their appearance alone. Sluts come in all shapes and sizes with no descrimination based on gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. However, one may identify a slut based upon the things they say. If a person is bragging about their numerous sexual conquests, one can safely assume that person is a slut. This bragging may also be accompanied by discussions of copious alcohol consumption and other poor life choices.
2. Have you ever called someone a slut? Describe in detail a specific time that you called someone a slut and why you did.
On many occasions I called one Shel Gillen a slut. Some of the behaviors she displayed that led me to the conclusion that she was, in fact, a slut, were bragging about one night stands, sleeping with men who were already attached, and proclaiming that she lost her virginity in a threesome. These behaviors wre displayed regularly and publicly.
3. Have you ever been called a slut? Why and under what circumstances? How did you feel?
I have never been called a slut, nor have I done anything to deserve being called a slut.
4. How would you respond if someone close to you was called a slut (family, friend, parent, romantic partner, etc) Would you think of them differently? If so, why?
That would depend on whether that person deserved to be called a slut. If someone who displays no slutty behavior was called a slut, I would be offended and indignant on their behalf. However, if they were actually a slut, I would let it pass. If I was already close to that person, I would probably already know that they were a slut and chose to associate with them anyway, so my perception of them would most likely not be significantly altered.
5. Does the fear of being labeled a slut have an impact on the way young women dress and make sexual decisions? Why? Details if possible.
Unfortunately, society often reinforces the double standard that women who dress provocatively and express their sexuality openly are condemned as sluts by other women, while men who behave identically are congratulated by their peers. This double standard makes promiscuity a taboo for women and an expectation for men. However, some women who are only looking for one time sexual encounters and therefore have little regard for these social roles, dressing and behaving however they please.
This final question is for GWS:
6. How do you define marriage? Please be detailed.
Marriage is the legal union between two people. Often these unions are romantic in nature, but in some cases (reality tv contestants, drunk people in Las Vegas, gold diggers, etc.) the marriage is based on some petty or superficial reason. Some marriages are religious in nature, though religion does not necessarily be a part of the marriage. If two people can fill out a marriage license and have it recognized by the state, then they can get married.
