But he had to admit, it was nice not having chains on his hands, or wearing something beyond an orange jumper. It made him feel a bit more like a person, which was helping him a bit more mentally then he had thought. And he got internet time too in the library and there were books. Little things he hadn't realized he missed.
When he heard Pam's voice, he hesitated a moment. He wasn't really sure if he wanted her to see him like this. But it was too late now, and he slowly walked over, and was grateful that most of the cuts and bruises on his face were faded.
"I didn't know you were planning on visiting," he said as he sat across from her.

He did look a little better than she'd expected, than she'd heard described, but he still looked like hell. Shaved head, pale yellow tinge to his skin in some places which could have been bruises or from an imaginative person could have been cheese puff powder but she had a pretty good idea of what it was. He looked like he'd been through the wars. At least he didn't look like he'd managed to find a way to keep scoring in prison. Some people did.
"We got your stuff all moved in and squared away, so that's waiting for you when you get outta here. Just figured I'd stop by, let you know, give you some down time from," one hand sort of gestured up-ish and twirled around. "All this. Much as the visiting room is down time," shrug. "But hey."

There were opportunities, but he was avoiding them at all costs.
"Thanks, for this, and for taking in my stuff. Once I get out of rehab, we can just move it to whatever halfway house they put me in."

And while she was still trying not to bounce, Sam's quietness and something in his slouched posture and beaten-down manner made her more subdued, or made it easier to be more subdued.
"How're you holding up in here? Must be easier than the last place they had you in, I don't hear much by the time it gets to me but it sounded..."
