Well, this sucks...

I was in a good mood all day. I was excited because I was going to (and did) take Phoenix off of hiatus, but now I'm just frustrated. My external hard drive just... stopped working. The part that kills me is that the data is still there; I can see that 50 GB of space is being used when I look at the drive's properties, yet when ( Read more... )

From what I know, most of the time when external drives fail it's because an internal cable came lose. It has to be converted from SATA to USB to be able to be plugged in externally, and the connection doesn't always hold up after enough time.

That said, I've never heard of this problem in particular but it seems pretty probable to me that you'll be able to get your data back. This kind of thing is exactly why I only use internal drives now, incidentally. xD;

A similar reason is why I tend to favor externals, though I know some people have had bad luck with them. XD; I've had this one of several years, though, and I've never had a single problem, whereas about ten years ago, my family had a couple, massive internal failures. ;-; I've been wary ever since, even though I take very good care of my computer, and I'm sure those failures were due to my parents not being as technologically inclined as they thought they were, at the time.

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed.

ETA: I... didn't even know I was on my Phoenix journal, lol. Sorry about that.
