I SAID I'D FINISH IT THIS WEEK BUT IT DIDN'T HAPPEN, SO YEAH Q___Q

vixx animal shelter au, ii.

Hakyeon has a problem.

“This is a problem,” he says aloud to his apartment. His tiny, cramped one bedroom apartment that doesn’t technically allow pets. “You,” he says, pointing accusingly at the three cats napping away on his couch that is too big for the room. “Are a problem.”

His cats ignore him.

“Urgh,” he says with feeling, nudging Ravi, the striped ginger, with his foot. Ravi snores loudly.

“I hate you,” he says matter-of-factly when his ragdoll, Leo, turns to look at him. They have a staring match which Hakyeon shamefully loses and Leo blinks slowly, thoroughly unimpressed. “Go back to sleep,” he snaps. Leo does, but not before whipping his tail around and thwacking the most recently adopted munchkin on the head. N starts awake, eyes wide, head twisting from side to side.

Hakyeon sighs deeply. N blinks at him uncertainly. He crouches down, and N clambers off the couch unsteadily before hopping into his lap. “You’re the only one who understands me,” he says morosely, petting N’s head. N mewls encouragingly.

Sanghyuk volunteers at the animal shelter on the weekends. He’s a “companion” which basically means he plays with the animals and makes sure their cages are clean. It’s a nice way to take a break from demands of college, his nagging parents, and Hakyeon’s relentless barrage of pleas to get him to watch his cats.

He’s humming to himself as he washes the food bowls. He’s just shaking out the excess water of the last of them when his phone buzzes with a text from Hakyeon, asking him if he can be ready to leave in fifteen minutes. Sanghyuk sighs and pockets his phone. There’s no point in texting back because if Hakyeon is texting him, it means Hakyeon is already here because Sanghyuk has known Hakyeon his entire life because Hakyeon is nothing if not predictably unpredictable.

Sure enough, when Sanghyuk heads to the front of the shelter, Hakyeon is already there, talking Taekwoon’s ears off. Taekwoon, God knows why, looks less than irritated. In fact, he looks mildly amused.

“Stop bothering Taekwoon,” Sanghyuk says loudly as he approaches the counter, reaching over for the volunteers’ timesheet to sign out.

Hakyeon has the gall to look affronted. “I wasn’t!” he says haughtily. “And who do you think are, talking to me so informally like that.”

Sanghyuk rolls his eyes. Hakyeon pokes him in the waist.

“Stop!” Sanghyuk yelps, hopping out of reach. He’s always been a bit ticklish, and Hakyeon, the bastard, grins and turns back to Taekwoon.

“Anyway,” he says. “I think N is really starting to like his new home!” he continues cheerfully. Sanghyuk rolls his eyes. Hakyeon, being Hakyeon, seems to have the inability to say no to any cute animal that crosses his path (Sanghyuk included). There is a legitimate reason Sanghyuk has tried and failed on countless occasions to get his parents to not ask Hakyeon to come get him every Saturday.

“How are Ravi and Leo adjusting?”

“Oh, you know,” Hakyeon says with a wave of his hand. “Ravi sleeps all the time--to be honest, I don’t think he’s noticed he’s got a new friend--and Leo, well, it’s really cute actually, N follows Leo around all the time, and Leo acts like he can’t be bothered, but they always take naps together, it’s so adorable--look, I have pictures!”

Sanghyuk rolls his eyes again, as Hakyeon and Taekwoon crowd over Hakyeon’s phone, Hakyeon cooing at the five million pictures he’s taken since last Saturday, and Taekwoon pursing his lips in that way that he does when confronted with baby animals and small children. Their heads are practically smashed against each other, and Sanghyuk kind of wants to throw up.

“Wait,” says Taekwoon suddenly, grabbing Hakyeon’s wrist. “Send me that one?”

Sanghyuk makes silent, retching noises between their back. Hakyeon looks over at him with concern. “Are you okay?” he asks. “You look pale. There’s been a bug going around, and did you know the high school was shut down last week because three students tested positive for TB?”

“I’m fine,” Sanghyuk says sweetly. “I’m just worried for your cats in case your building manager sees them.”

Hakyeon narrows his eyes before grinning and thumping Sanghyuk on the back. Sanghyuk stumbles a little under the force of it. “Ha!” Hakyeon practically yells. “Sanghyukkie is so cute, isn’t he? Being so concerned about me, he’s just so cute.” He emphasizes that with a hard pinch to Sanghyuk’s cheeks.

“Ow,” mumbles Sanghyuk, regretting having ever opened his mouth. Taekwoon frowns.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” he asks. Sanghyuk scowls when he realizes that Taekwoon is talking to Hakyeon. “Having three cats can be pretty intense. And you’ve never had cats before, right?”

Hakyeon dismisses the concern with a wave of his arm. “It’s fine, really! They’re really great, no trouble at all, I forget that they’re there sometimes to be honest.” His eyes widen. “I mean--not that I forget, they’re just so quiet, you know, it’s like they’re not even there--and I mean, I know they’re there, but no one else ever seems to! And it’s not like there’s a rule that says cats aren’t allowed! It’s just not encouraged.”

Sanghyuk and Taekwoon stare at him. “Except there is,” Sanghyuk says slowly. He gets a kick to the back of his knees for his troubles. “There is!” Sanghyuk yells in frustration. Taekwoon looks rather alarmed.

Alright, so maybe there is a condition in Hakyeon’s lease agreement that says no pets allowed period end of discussion, but that’s just a technicality, and isn’t it more important to be a good samaritan and spread good will than to the read fine print?

Ravi steps on his face, interrupting his train of thought. “Mrawgh,” says Hakyeon around the fur in his mouth. Ravi settles himself on Hakyeon’s chest and curls up for another nap. Hakyeon sighs and accepts that he’s going to be picking out ginger hairs from the back of his tongue for the rest of his life.

The TV is playing some drama that his sisters keep raving about. He has no idea what’s going on, but the remote is too far for him to reach with a cat on his chest so he leaves it alone. He scratches Ravi’s ears absentmindedly and wonders what the hell he’s going to do when his landlord inevitably discovers the cats and kicks them all out.

Sanghyuk would probably be very unimpressed, raise an eyebrow at him, and say, “I told you so, hyung,” because the brat is the most unhelpful child ever. He wonders briefly if Taekwoon would know of any cat-friendly places he could move to and immediately abolishes the thought because Taekwoon is busy with the shelter and really doesn’t need the stress of knowing that Hakyeon had maybe perjured himself when he signed the adoption papers and claimed that he had a suitable home for the animals. (It’s all semantics, really, because there will be a suitable home. Hakyeon just hasn’t found it, yet.)

It could be worse, he muses when Leo and N reappear from the bedroom, and N tries to get his attention by pawing at his cheeks until Leo meows impatiently from the floor and N hops back down to nestle into the ragdoll’s side for their afternoon nap. Yep, Hakyeon thinks as he gives them each a fond pat on the head, arm bent awkwardly so as not to disturb a gently snoring Ravi. Totally could’ve been worse. He could’ve been allergic, like Jaehwan.

-----

Wonshik is really the worst houseguest. He’s loud, somewhat clumsy, and he terrifies Hakyeon’s cats. Today is no different. Hakyeon opens his apartment door to a cheery grin and excited, "Good morning!" that's loud enough to send the cats streaking into the bathroom.

"You got another one," Wonshik blinks as N scampers along behind Leo.

Hakyeon shrugs a little guiltily as he steps aside to let Wonshik in. "He's so cute though," he says. "You should've seen him when he was at the shelter. He was the tiniest thing I've ever seen."

Wonshik drops his backpack on the floor before toeing off his shoes and proceeds to flop gracelessly onto the couch. "I can see why you couldn't resist yourself," he says, amused, grabbing the remote and flipping through the channels quickly.

"Shut up," Hakyeon grouses. "God, your feet reek. Why are you even here? Your disregard for personal hygiene finally too much for Hongbin?"

"Cute, hyung," says Wonshik. "And no, Hongbin has a shoot today, and I'm bored so I came over to study until he's done."

Wonshik's a third year environmental engineering student that Hakyeon had met in Linear Algebra, and they'd bonded over a mutual hatred for their professor and an inexplicable love for Schrodinger's wave equation. They also shared a less geeky love for overly sweet mocha lattes, and when Hakyeon had learned that Wonsik worked part-time as a barista, he'd declared them friends for life so long as Wonshik would give him a free cup whenever he came by. (Hakyeon tries not to abuse that privilege too much because Wonshik's boss kind of gives him the creeps.)

"How is Hongbin? I haven't seen him in forever! You only ever come when he's working," Hakyeon complains. Hongbin is a sophomore studying photography and is also a model, and he's a pretty good one. Hakyeon still has a copy of the small spread he did for GQ last year.

He is also Wonshik's sort-of boyfriend, which, how Hakyeon does not know because Wonshik is a lost cause who would buy new underwear whenever he ran out because he doesn't know how to do laundry, and then there’s Hongbin who is every bit the kind of boy that everyone and their mother falls in a little bit in love with.

“Anyway,” he continues before Wonshik can answer. “Since you’re here, I have a favor to ask.”

Wonshik eyes him warily. “What is it,” he says flatly.

“So, the cats,” Hakyeon begins, and Wonshik groans. “They need to be somewhere where they can be free!” Hakyeon protests. “They can’t be cooped up here forever. I need to give them something better.”

“I hate cats,” Wonshik says evenly. Hakyeon ignores him.

“Your place is so much bigger than mine, and it’s not like we’d stay long anyway--I don’t want to intrude or anything--it’s just a temporary solution to a more-or-less urgent issue at hand!”

“Our place doesn’t allow pets either! You know this! It’s why we had to give away Rovix,” says Wonshik sullenly. Oh. He’d forgotten about that bulldog.

“But it’s so much bigger,” Hakyeon says despondently. “And! And! Cats are so much quieter. No one will ever know we were there!”

“That is a lie,” Wonshik mutters under his breath, crossing his arms with a scowl. “Everyone is going to know you’re there.”

“Shut up,” says Hakyeon.

“Shut up,” parrots Wonshik. Hakyeon shakes him.

“Wonshik-ah,” he begs. “Please, please, please.”

Wonshik sighs exasperatedly. “Why don’t you ask Jaehwan?”

Hakyeon smacks him on the back of the head. “You know Jaehwan is allergic,” he says, lips curled with disapproval. Wonsik shoves him away.

“He has a cat though!”

Hakyeon smacks him again. “A hairless one.”

“Oh,” says Wonshik. “Oh, that makes sense.”

“Nevermind,” says Hakyeon. “Forget it. I don’t want your stupidity to infect my children.”

“Yay,” says Wonshik, quickly followed by an, “Ow!” as Hakyeon punches him on the shoulder.

-----

sanghyuk-ah you know you’re my favorite, right? ^^

sanghyuk-ah, don’t you love me?

sanghyuk-ah ♡ aren’t i your favorite hyung?

ya!! help me you brat!!!

Sanghyuk turns off his phone. Taekwoon watches him with raised eyebrows. “Are you listening?” he asks impatiently.

Sanghyuk ducks his head. “Sorry,” he says, making a mental note to kill Hakyeon later. “Hakyeon-hyung can just be really--” he makes a face and hopes Taekwoon understands.

“Oh,” says Taekwoon, expression softening. “Is he alright?”

“Who even c--Wait, no, I mean,” Sanghyuk cuts himself off quickly, struck with sudden inspiration. “No,” he says slowly, looking at Taekwoon imploringly. “No, he is very much so not okay.”

Taekwoon’s brows furrow with concern. “What is it?” he asks.

“It’s just--” Sanghyuk sighs, and puts on his best I Am Very Upset face. “--Hakyeon wouldn’t want me to tell you this, but he’s been having trouble with the cats, you see because his lease strictly forbids pets of any kind, but Hakyeon has a bleeding heart, and it’s also kind of my fault, too, I guess, since I’ve been telling him about the overcrowding that we’ve been having and Hakyeon-hyung just couldn’t say no.”

Taekwoon looks very worried, so Sanghyuk figures in for a penny, in for a pound, and pinches himself hard under the guise of fidgeting nervously. His eyes water from the pain, and he looks up at Taekwoon pleadingly. “It’s all my fault,” he whispers. “Hakyeon-hyung is going to be homeless, and it’s all my fault.”

Taekwoon reaches out and pats him on the shoulder. “Everything’s going to be okay,” Taekwoon says quietly. “I’ll take care of it.”

“Um,” squeaks Sanghyuk. “What do you mean, exactly.”

“He can stay with me,” Taekwoon says.

Sanghyuk chokes down a laugh of triumph. “I mean,” Taekwoon adds hastily, face flushing slightly. “I have the space, and my building is pet-friendly. Hakyeon-ah can stay with me, if he wants.”

“You can’t tell him I told you this,” Sanghyuk says quickly. Because he’s going to kill me. “Because...Because Hakyeon-hyung would be burdened! He’d think he was a burden to you, and he’d never accept.”

“Oh,” says Taekwoon, biting his lower lip. “What should I do?”

Sanghyuk thinks for a moment. “Tell him you’re looking for a roommate,” he says.

Taekwoon nods slowly, considering. “Okay,” he says after a moment. “Can I get his number?”

Sanghyuk rattles off Hakyeon’s cell phone number obediently and gives himself a pat on the back for a job well done.

THINGS THAT STILL NEED TO HAPPEN:
  • more meddling courtesy of sanghyuk bc hakyeon is dumb and thinks taekwoon "ONLY SEES HIM AS A ROOMMATE"
  • hongbin and wonshik get a cat maybe but wonshik doesn't want to keep it because he hates cats right and this one's no exception even though it's tiny and sad and it really does look like a bean, but NO, wonshik hates cats end of story no further arguments
  • taekwoon most definitely does not "only see hakyeon as a roommate"
  • "oh" says hakyeon, breath catching. "we're living together," he squeaks. "and we haven't even kissed yet."
  • so they fix that
  • stuff
  • idk stuff just happens you know

stop! au time, stupidly in love, i will finish this!! soon!!!!, claws at my life
