Please. I’m so lonely. Play with me, Mommy?

“Yunho, it’s not good to stay up so long. You need sleep.” Yunho was gulping down his seventh cup of coffee, glaring at Yoochun. “My wife is missing, and you expect me to sleep? Are you fucking crazy?” Yoochun winced.

“You’ll work better when you’re not tired, you know. When was the last time you slept?” Yunho ignored him, rubbing his temples. “Why?” he whispered. “Why him?” He looked up at Yoochun with bloodshot eyes. “Why is it Jaejoong?” He begged, eyes tearing.

“Shit, man, I don’t know,” Yoochun missed his soul mate as much as Yunho did; yet he refused to show it. “Get to bed now, and we’ll look for clues later.” He escorted Yunho to his room, making sure he got in before leaving. Walking back, questions swirled through his mind.

Why was it Jaejoong?

Yunho closed his eyes, images of the doe-eyed boy flickering through his mind. He was so pretty when they got married, his face was positively glowing and he smiled like an angel. And then he was taken away not three months later. Yunho grit his teeth, clenching his fists. He would find Jaejoong. And he’d make whoever took him away pay.

Mommy, where are you going? You promised to play with me today. Mommy?

Yunho walked into his house. He hadn’t been in it since Jaejoong disappeared, and it sat there undisturbed. He slipped off his shoes, stepping inside the white corridors. Maybe Jaejoong wasn’t really gone, he was in the kitchen and soon he’d come out and give Yunho his hug...

“Focus, Hyung,” Yoochun said gently. Yunho shook his head to clear his thoughts. “I got it,” he said hoarsely. Slowly, he made his way to his bedroom- their bedroom. Pushing open the door, his eyes began to fill up with tears again. Jaejoong’s stuff was there, untouched. Yunho opened the closet door and ran his hand over Jaejoong’s favorite shirt- there was no way he’d leave without it.

“C’mon, Hyung. You need to see this.” Yoochun pulled him upstairs, into the bedroom their first child would have used. “What... is this?” Yunho stared, eyes not comprehending the sight.

A dark crimson hue was staining the white. Yunho saw something drip onto the floor and he slowly looked up. There was a stain on the ceiling as well, and something red was dripping.

“It’s coming from the third floor,” Yoochun whispered. He swallowed, resisting the urge to puke. They ran up the stairs, throwing the door open to the guest room- and Yunho prayed to god it wasn’t Jaejoong’s dead body.

“Teddy bears.” Yunho said letting out a breath of relief. He held his nose in disdain as they scanned the room. A pile of bears of every size and shape lay in a heap, their button eyes pulled out and heads tugged off. Cotton fur and limbs lay everywhere, and all were stained with red.

“Test the blood,” Yoochun said to an investigator. He nodded, bowing once. “The blood hasn’t turned black yet- he must’ve been here not long ago.”

“That’s impossible. Why would he return?” Yunho furrowed his eyebrows, refusing the urge to gag. The investigator returned.

“It’s animal blood,” He explained. “Thank god,” Yoochun muttered. “I need to get out of here,” Yunho muttered. He needed fresh air. Taking long strides, he paused suddenly.

“Wait.”

“What is it?” Yoochun turned.

Yunho stood in front of the dresser. He picked up a comb, pulling out a long strand of black hair. “It’s a girl’s,” He whispered. He looked down at the table, suddenly compelled to look in a drawer. He selected the bottom right one, and a picture stared up at him.

“Hyung?” Yoochun asked, slipping the hair into a baggie. “It doesn’t belong here.” Yunho said. “What?”

“This isn’t mine. And Jaejoong doesn’t draw like this.” He held up the picture. It looked like a child’s drawing, using crayons. There was a sun far off in the distance and what looked like two people. Yunho’s eyes narrowed at the bottom left, where it was written in an inexperienced hand.

Mommy and me

“Doesn’t that look like Jaejoong?” Yoochun asked, furrowing his eyes. The tall figure in it did bear somewhat of a resemblance- blonde hair, black eyes- and... “That’s Jaejoong’s outfit.”

“Are you serious?”

“That’s the outfit he wore when he went missing,” Yunho’s voice was raspy. “He’s been here. That crazy son of a bitch has been here.”

“Yunho, this is crudely drawn. You can’t jump to conclusions on this,” But Yoochun slipped it into his folder to look at later.

“I know it’s him. It has to be Jaejoong. Who else could it be?” Yoochun was silent.

“Maybe it was a child,” he said thoughtfully. “The teddy bears, the picture, who knows?” Yoochun’s dark eyes explored his. “Or maybe it’s just a crazy old man who thinks he’s 5.”

“Like a mental disorder.” Yoochun’s eyes widened. “Quick! Check all the asylums and hospitals to see if anyone’s escaped.” The police scattered quickly, cell phones being whipped out and dialed.

“At least we’re getting somewhere,” Yoochun said softly. Yunho had left the room, wandering around the living room, touching random items.

“Another teddy bear?” Yunho noticed the stuffed animal sitting on the couch. Unlike the ones upstairs, it looked handmade. The eyes were mismatched, stitches showing visibly. It seemed worn out, little patches sewed all over and cotton spilling out of a few torn parts. Yunho felt a sick dread fill him as he stepped closer to it.

“Is that Jaejoong’s?” Yoochun asked spotting the ragged thing. “No,” Yunho said narrowing his eyes. “It’s not.” He picked up the stuffed animal, holding it gingerly in his arms. It seemed like it was really special to someone. Why would they leave it here?

“He’s playing with us.” Yunho hadn’t stopped staring at the bear. “So many clues in one place.” Yunho turned to him, eyes dark. “It’s like he’s saying he knows we won’t find him.”

“Maybe. Or he wants you to find him. Can you feel anything?” Yoochun asked. He didn’t like the bear very much; just looking at it gave him chills.

Yunho stroked the bear, holding it close to him like he was a child. He felt like he stepping into the owner’s shoes, seeing through his eyes and thinking his thoughts. Dialogue sounded through his head.

“For me?”

“Yes, dear.”

“Thank you Mommy!”

“You’re welcome.”

Yunho felt warmth spread through his body as he concentrated harder.

“Mommy, it ripped!”

“Take care of it better. I’ll sew it up for you later.”

“I’m sorry...”

Yoochun watched, as Yunho stood still, unmoving.

“Go to the present, the present,” Yunho said silently.

“Mommy, where are you going? Mommy! Don’t leave me! You promised we’d be together forever!”

“Goodbye, baby.”

“Mommy? Take me with you!”

A tear dripped down Yunho’s face unconsciously. His mother abandoned the poor child.

“Come back Mommy. Come back; let’s be a happy family together again. I won’t be bad anymore. Promise, promise...”

“Hyung. Hyung!” Yoochun shook him and Yunho’s eyes snapped open. “Are you okay?” He asked, handing him a tissue.

“Y-Yeah,” He muttered. “I just... nothing. Nothing.” Yunho blinked upwards, willing his tears away.

“It’s a child.” He glanced at Yoochun. “The person who took Jaejoong is a child.”

“That’s impossible,” Yoochun snorted. “No way a kid could be so genius.”

“Unless the kid is grown up by now.”

“So you mean-“

“Search the orphanages.”
