2013: a retrospect

Jan 02, 2014 23:27

I wasn't going to do it but then I did it. end of year survey, go!

1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
went on an overseas vacation without my family; worked in a digital marketing agency where they paid me actual money (instead of say, the currency of “experience”).

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don’t think I made any resolutions for last year, but here are my ones from the end of 2011:
- get a job
- get help
- get fitter
- be kinder
HILARIOUSLY, I completed none of those! except for the job part, I have had about a hundred jobs because HOW TO BE STABLE??? I talked a little about how I want to achieve my goals in 2014 here.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
I was about to say no, but one of my aunts gave birth to a little girl in…like, August? I visited her once, and then promptly forgot her existence, which was minorly embarrassing when Christmas rolled around.

4. What countries did you visit?
the United States and New Zealand, in January. so long ago.

5. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
"direction; commitment; faith in myself and others.” is what I said the last time I did this survey (in 2011!) and it’s pretty much the same. so many things have changed, but not my outlook on life! ;_;

6. What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory?
time spent wandering around museums in DC.

7. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

8. What was your biggest failure?
unable to fix my brain, or hold down a fucking job because ANXIETY and INABILITY TO GET OUT OF BED. OR BE AROUND PEOPLE.

9. Did you suffer illness or injury?
does mental breakdown count? because that.

10. What was the best thing you bought?
more books. all the books. oh, and the Gypsy Moth Flight Handbag thing from Crumpler - it’s pretty neat I like it, it allows me to carry all my crap with me everywhere.

11. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Kyri, for putting up with my crap when lesser folk would have (rightfully) just said “nope, this is too much, see ya"

12. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
mostly me. definitely me.

13. Where did most of your money go?
food and books. but let’s face it, mostly food.

14. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
my emotions have been extremely neutral this year. like, more neutral than usual. I don’t think I got really, really, really excited about anything. I did enjoy participating in P4A though. I actually got unusually excited about that.

15. What song/album will always remind you of 2013?
I don’t even know. I listened to a lot of mainstream music this year, because of excessive car rides with Kyri, but none of them are particularly 2013-ish to me.

16. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. Happier or sadder? sometimes cannot tell the difference
ii. Thinner or fatter? fatter, jesus fucking christ.
iii. Richer or poorer? technically making more money, but it’s all going to bills etc. so really just the same.

17. What do you wish you'd done more of?
travelling, loving, forgiving.

18. What do you wish you'd done less of?
self-loathing, binge eating, avoiding.

19. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent it with family as usual - ate a tonne; debated long amongst my cousins about which film to watch and finally settled on The Lion King; in the evening we sprawled out in the living room, moaning about how much food we had eaten. it was pretty good.

20. Did you fall in love in 2013?
I keep falling in love over and over again with the same man - barf-inducingly cheesy, but accurate.

21. How many one night stands in this last year?
see above (I am almost painfully monogamous).

22. What was your favorite TV program?
Parks and Recreation, The Mindy Project, and 30 Rock (RIP).

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I find it hard to hate anyone (except myself! hahahahaha).

24. What was the best book you read?
I am currently reading “This Book is Full of Spiders” by David Wong, which is a great “zombie” apocalypse book. it is the sequel to “John Dies at the End”, which is also very good and full of monsters. I also re-read the entire Princess Diaries series last month, and it helped me get out of a particularly bad slump.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
THE FROZEN SOUNDTRACK. A+ DISNEY.

oh and also Lorde.

26. What did you want and get?
several jobs that I quit shortly after beginning because BRAIN PROBLEMS (the problem is that I am an idiot).

27. What did you want and not get?
iPhone 5s. I just kept buying books and paying the bills and eating out every fucking night. I really need to stop eating out so much, then I can afford a new phone. I don’t even need a new phone; I just want it. it’s so shiny.

28. What was your favourite film of this year?
FROZEN!!!! also, Gravity - I recommend watching it in 3D and in a fancy cinema with those armchairs that recline, because that is how I watched it and it was perfect.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned twenty-four (barf) and I had a pretty chill day, had lunch at the Grounds with Kyri, and then perused my favourite hipster foodie grocery store.

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
more travelling, and if I had been able to move out (still a work in progress).

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?
skater dresses, and tights as pants paired with oversized shirts or jumpers. because those are the only things I feel comfortable in since I have ballooned (I cannot emphasise how fat I got you guys, REALLY FAT).

33. What kept you sane?
if I knew the answer, I would probably not end each day crying in the foetal position.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you like the most?
Mindy Kaling and Maureen Johnson are my heroes forever.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?
I am not stirred by any political issue, because (and this is terrible of me) I don’t care. oh wait, treatment of asylum seekers and those fucking terrible ads openly threatening “people smugglers". HOLY FUCKING SHIT. oh, and Tony Abbott got elected as prime minister - this was a terrible year for Australia.

36. Who did you miss?
everybody! I didn’t catch up with people enough.

37. Who was the best new person you met?
I didn’t meet anyone new (that I stayed in touch with). I am terrible at friends.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013:
a whole external support network means nothing if I can’t take control of my own life. also, untreated mental health issues will spiral way way way out of control if you don’t nip it in the bud.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
I CAME IN LIKE A WRECKING BALL.

actually, that is the song that will most remind me of 2013.
